Sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday night and 6 a.m. today, someone stole the air hose from behind the Canadian Tire gas bar on Topsail Road. Ashley McVean, the gas bar’s manager, said the unit would have required a lot of effort to steal.

“It is screwed on by four big super-screws and concrete all around it, and they smashed the concrete, everything,” she said.

Proceeds from the coin-operated air hose go to support Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program, which helps defray the cost of sports programs and equipment for children. Some of the Jumpstart proceeds go towards the City of St. John’s’ Recreation Experiences And Leisure program.

“My daughter benefits by that,” said McVean. “She’s in some programs through the REAL program and Jumpstart is a big help to the REAL program as well. … she attends activities like dance and swimming and everything else, and without that program I probably wouldn’t be able to afford it.”

McVean estimated the pump — which she said was emptied every five to six months — contained close to a thousand dollars.”
