The abortion rights advocacy group Voices for Choice held a rally this afternoon outside the Athena Health Centre on LeMarchant Road in St. John's to protest the closure of the Morgentaler Clinic in New Brunswick.

The New Brunswick clinic will close Thursday due to lack of funding.

Voices for Choice said in a news release this is largely the fault of a regulation that restricts public funding for abortions in the province.

It says the closure of the Morgentaler clinic in New Brunswick will make the Athena Health Centre in St. John's the only dedicated abortion provider east of Montreal.

Voices for Choice is also collecting monetary donations to give to Reproductive Justice NB to go toward a lease to open a reproductive health-care facility in New Brunswick.

Organizations: Athena Health Centre

What kind of regulation restricts public funding for abortion in NB??? This is shameful-access to healthcare for women should not be denied this way. I applaud your courage for demonstrating against the closure of this clinic and against this attack on women's rights

Abortions are not ended in NB as they are available in the public health care system as in NL. However, the private for profit business that committed abortions is closed. It is about time it shut its doors as there is no room for two-tiered health care in this country where you can skip the line if you have enough money. It is a shame to see these people rally against the Canadian Health Care system's principles.
