A man who was arrested after someone allegedly spotted him in a vehicle holding a gun made a brief courtroom appearance in St. John’s today.

John Peter Richard Squires, 30, faces several charges, including one for possession of a prohibited firearm — a long rifle.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s overnight report, a call came in at 2:20 a.m. from the centre city area of St. John’s that someone saw a man in a vehicle with a gun.

The RNC said Squires was arrested without incident. In addition to the charge for possession of a prohibited weapon, Squires is accused of possessing an unauthorized firearm, breaching a prohibition order and storing a firearm in an unsafe manner.

Squires agreed to be remanded in custody.

A bail hearing at St. John’s provincial court is scheduled for Friday.
