Massey Drive home destroyed in fire

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says a fire that destroyed a home in Massey Drive on Monday was probably caused by a barbecue.

Const. Chris Pittman of the Corner Brook detachment said the barbecue was close to the house and was on at the time of the fire.

Pittman said the RCMP received the fire call at approximately 5:40 p.m. and responded to the scene at the end of Lakeview Drive.

The  Massey Drive Volunteer Fire Department and the Corner Brook Fire Department fought the blaze.

Pittman said it took about two hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze and there were some hotspots which flared up overnight.

Pittman said the investigation into the cause of the fire continued Tuesday, but he said it is “highly probable” the barbecue caused the blaze.

He added investigators may never get a definite cause because of the damage to the home.

Police do not suspect foul play.
