A weather system that landed on the Burin Peninsula about 11 p.m. Monday brought 68.9 millimetres of rain to the St. Lawrence area by about 5 a.m. Tuesday. Though much more brief, downpours on the Avalon brought substantial rain in very short periods of time.

The Waterford River was swollen Tuesday as a result of heavy rain in the morning.
Dale Foote of the Gander weather office said the accumulation on the Avalon would have been more severe if not for the speed at which the system moved through.
“That’s what saved us,” he said.
Even with the system clipping along, the west end of the capital city received 27.2 mm of rain. Other areas with large accumulations included Badger with 53 mm, La Scie with 52.3 mm and Cormack with 51.7 mm.
