Stolen Telegram delivery van recovered
A Telegram delivery van that was stolen and the subject of a wild chase earlier this month has been recovered.
Driver John Morgan stopped at the Goobies gas station early in the morning of Aug. 11 and left the van running while he went inside to drop off papers. He was away from the van for just a few moments, but by the time he returned, two men had hopped in and were pulling away.
A bystander in the parking lot helped Morgan chase the thieves — bundles of papers flying out of the van’s open side door as it sped down the highway towards Whitbourne — until the RCMP took over.
This week, Morgan got a call from the RNC, letting him know his van was found somewhere in Portugal Cove — the police didn’t tell him exactly where. His cellphone charger was missing, but there was nothing else stolen from the van — the thieves left behind tools, his satellite radio and the remaining newspapers.
“The punks that stole it, they weren’t too interested in news, now, they were only interested in being news,” Morgan said Tuesday.
He’s waiting to learn about the extent of the damage.
“They beat out the windshield, and they beat out the side panel window, and they beat out the back window,” he said.
Police haven’t found the thieves yet, said Morgan.
“I’m going to see how she is mechanically-wise,” he said. “They obviously were in a grassy field somewhere spinning her out, so they could have done any kind of damage underneath, and I gotta get it all checked out. If you’re at that, you could be cracking off brakelines. I’m going to put a windshield in it to see if it’ll operate OK and drive it around for a couple of weeks, make sure the motor and transmission’s OK, and if that’s OK I’ll put the rest of the glass back in, and back in service.
