A concerned citizen's call led to impaired driving charges against a 19-year-old man overnight in St. John's, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said in a police report.

RNC cruiser

The call came to police at 1:30 p.m. Officers caught up with the man in the centre of the city and charged him for impaired driving and driving over .08. They also found that he had more than $12,000 worth of outstanding fines. Police added tickets for driving with a suspended license, no insurance and no license to the collection.

The man was held in custody for a court appearance on New Year's Day.

Make it a million, not going to collect any. What's the point of showing 200 million in receivables if all of it is doubtful???

Where's the deterrent? When is the justice system going to start throwing these types of criminals in jail?

Ditto to Doris re the judicial system in NL-they can't make a stand to improve the drinking and driving problem here....just go along with our little NL law book-allowing the ancient days of let them all drink and be fools/dangerous in a public manner, give them a scolding and send them home...and then repeat the same action: drunk drivers and judges-no shame.

Our system is so ineffective. How can someone with such outstanding fines not be dealt with promptly. People with such disregard should be put in a data base and checked regularly. They should also be put to work to pay their fines and not be encouraged to be a drag on society. These type people seem to be the headline news .

RNC you are wasting your time and our resources on this,as you can see another $3000.00 in fines will do nothing to deter them for being on the road, just as well to let them drive around town just like they had been doing the courts don't care our judges don't care they are making a fool out of the RNC
