Premier Dwight Ball launched pre-budget consultations this afternoon with a grim “call to action.”

Ball is asking people to tell the government how to cut, and what to do in order to raise more money.

Ball, flanked by senior ministers Cathy Bennett and Siobhan Coady, stressed the “multi-year” nature of the government’s plan. Ball said the government didn’t wind up in a fiscal crisis overnight, and the province won’t get out of it quickly either.

Finance Minister Bennett got into the ugly nitty gritty, and she had some choice words for the previous Progressive Conservative government.

Bennett pointed out that the previous government was running a deficit in the hundreds of millions of dollars even when oil prices were much higher.

Bennett said the government needs to fundamentally alter course and there will be tough choices.

“Engagement must be real, and must lead to substantial and measurable change,” she said.

So, this it it? Why bother holding a news conference when you have absolutely nothing to say? People! You should be as mad as hell about this! We elected this crowd on their promise to make difficult decisions and this is the best they can do? Kick it all down the road for another year and a half? This crowd don't have a clue. The premier is going out to Rocky Harbour to get answers??? This place needs a real shakeup in the public service, in the poor state of our collective health that makes us the fattest and sickest province in the country, in the need to resettle near- death communities, in the culture of government dependency, and this is how the Liberal elite responds? You were elected on the promise of change and action and being ready to move forward. Well, get on with it and do what you were elected to do.

Every Government for the past 12 years have been eager to "listen to the people"...consult with the people to see what they want......Given the "lack of success " of this consulting with the people program, obvious by the financial mess the province is in,...the new government would be wise to go another route...usually somewhere in the consultation, someone demands a new hospital.

What was wrong with cutting our funding for the Arts? It is a total waste of money anyway!

Spoken like a true rube. You might try getting out now and again and seeing a show at the LSPU Hall. Or just pick up a book by a NFLD author. You might be pleasantly surprised, or dare I say enlightened!

Oh....MY....GOD...!!! We are in such deep deep trouble....this is it? This is what Dwight and his brain trust has come up with? More public consultation....I mean this is idiocy and it's finest....even the Liberal partisans have to admit that this is a total plan, no vision...nada...nothing...but they are going back to Rock Harbor for the answers? !! Give me a break...and do your job!
