It looks like St. John’s-metro and the Avalon Peninsula will escape the wrath of a winter storm affecting all of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador today, but conditions could get messy beginning this afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for St. John’s and vicinity. It says snow, at times mixed with ice pellets and blowing snow is forecast to develop this afternoon over the Avalon Peninsula, then change over to rain showers or drizzle this evening.

Snowfall accumulations near 5 cm are expected, along with southeasterly winds gusting to 90 km/h with this system. “The public is advised to plan for the possibility of a longer than usual commute home this afternoon as visibility may be reduced in blowing snow.”

The St. John's-metro forecast is for snow, at times mixed with ice pellets beginning this afternoon and blowing snow over exposed areas late this afternoon. Snow and ice pellet amount 5 cm.

Wind becoming east 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning then southeast 50 gusting to 70 except gusting to 90 along parts of the coast late this afternoon. High 1 C.

Tonight, snow at times mixed with ice pellets is in the forecast, changing to a few rain showers and ending late this evening then partly cloudy with 40 percent chance of flurries. Snow and ice pellet amount 2 cm. Rainfall amount 2 mm. Wind southeast 50 km/h gusting to 70 except gusting to 90 along parts of the coast early this evening. Wind becoming southwest 50 gusting to 70 this evening. Low -2 C.

Storm, wind, surge warnings for west coast, Northern Peninsula and Labrador

Winter storm warnings, wind warnings and storm surge warnings are in effect for the west coast of the province, the Northern Peninsula and southeastern and central areas of Labrador.

In Corner Brook, snowfall accumulations of five to 10 cm are expected, but with winds gusting between 80 and 140 km/h this afternoon and tonight.

Environment Canada says “areas  of western Newfoundland prone to strong, downslope winds, such as Bonne Bay, can expect easterly winds gusting to near 140 km/h this afternoon and evening. High winds may cause downed trees or toss loose objects.”

The high winds will bring widespread blowing snow to the west coast this afternoon and evening. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity and Burgeo-Ramea. Environment Canada says hazardous winter conditions are expected.

Snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 cm are expected from Wednesday near noon to Thursday morning. Southeasterly winds gusting up to 110 km/h are expected to develop this afternoon. Winds are forecast to shift to southwesterly Wednesday night and may continue to exceed warning criteria until Thursday morning.

Environment Canada says these strong winds and fresh snowfall will combine to reduce visibility in blowing snow on Wednesday, making travel very dangerous.

It’s advising motorists to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

High waves, storm surge conditions between Port aux Basques, Burgeo

In addition, the weather office says a combination of high waves and storm surge is expected to result in pounding surf on Wednesday. Low lying infrastructure is at risk of damage during Wednesday's high tides between Port aux Basques and Burgeo.

Storm surge warnings are in effect for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity and Burgeo-Ramea area, with higher than normal water levels with large waves are expected near the coast.

A combination of high waves and storm surge is expected to result in pounding surf today.  Environment Canada says high waves combined with the surge may cause damage along the coast. People are advised to stay away from the affected shorelines.

Hazardous conditions on Northern Peninsula, parts of Labrador

On the Northern Peninsula and Labrador, hazardous conditions are also expected in some areas.

Environment Canada says an intense low pressure system approaching from the Gulf of St. Lawrence will spread snow, blowing snow and strong easterly winds over northern Newfoundland this afternoon and evening. Total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are anticipated. Winds gusting near 80 km/h will cause poor visibility in blowing snow. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

The system will bring heavy snow, blowing snow and strong northeasterly winds beginning late this afternoon to southeastern and central areas of Labrador. These conditions will then spread northward this evening to the mid-Labrador coast. Conditions will slowly improve beginning Thursday morning along the Strait and then later Thursday along portions of the mid Labrador coast.

Total snowfall amounts near 20 cm can be expected in most Labrador coastal areas while amounts approaching 35 cm are expected over elevated portions of the Trans-Labrador Highway. In addition, northeasterly winds gusting up to 80 km/h tonight and 90 km/h Thursday will cause poor visibility in blowing snow.

Environment Canada is advising motorists to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
