RCMP officers in Port aux Basques are seeking the assistance of the general public to try to identify the occupants of a vehicle involved in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer around 8 a.m. this morning.
The RCMP said in a news release, the collision occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway, just east of Doyles.
Given the initial report of a head-on collision, between a tractor trailer and an SUV, an ambulance was also dispatched to the scene. But, prior to either the police or ambulance arriving on the scene, the RCMP said “the driver and passenger of the SUV-type vehicle fled the scene, without leaving any details with the other driver involved.”
It’s believed the man and woman in the vehicle had just left a Marine Atlantic ferry in Port aux Basques when they were involved in the collision.
The vehicle they were operating had a Manitoba licence plate.
The RCMP is seeking the assistance of the general public in trying to identify these people.
The news release says the RCMP would also like to talk to a man who was driving a pickup truck in the area at the time of the collision, and turned around to offer assistance and offered the couple a drive from the scene.
The RCMP said it is not believed that the driver of this pickup truck had any direct involvement in this matter, other than to try to be a good Samaritan.
