The Health Sciences Centre, the Janeway Health and Rehabilitation Centre and the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre are back to normal operations after a three-hour Code Red Thursday.

Crews from the St. John's Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) were dispatched to the Health Sciences Centre on Thursday to deal with what is said to have been a malfunction with the building's HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning) system. Here, the Engine 51 pumper unit crew from the Kenmount Fire Station on O'Leary Avenue await to be given the all clear to leave.

Code Red means fire alarms have been activated. It’s believed that the alarms, which sounded from 9:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., were triggered by a ventilation system issue. The fire department and Eastern Health continue to look into it.

“We apologize to patients and clients for any delays in service. Eastern Health will work with any patients who left the building to have their appointments rescheduled,” reads a statement from the health authority.

“Eastern Health thanks patients, clients and employees for their patience at this time.”
