Senior Spaniard’s Bay firefighter calls for Seymour to step aside

In a photo taken from Facebook, Ross Snow (front right) is shown with other members of the Spaniard's Bay fire department.

Just hours after the Spaniard’s Bay mayor publicly apologized to the town’s only female firefighter for sexual harassment, a senior firefighter with the fire department called for Brenda Seymour to be temporarily placed on a leave of absence to clear the air.

The Conception Bay North town grapples with national attention for sexism in its fire service, after more than 20 firefighters resigned, protesting Seymour’s behaviour.

In a lengthy post on Facebook, Ross Snow identifies himself as firefighter in Spaniard’s Bay who has held positions including lieutenant, treasurer and first captain within the volunteer fire department. (Editor's note: Snow was one of the group who resigned Jan. 18)

Snow went into detail about the ongoing controversy involving Seymour and allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination as the department’s sole female firefighter.

Snow said he was the officer who was charged with investigating a crucial incident in which Seymour asked the fire chief for a new balaclava for her kit, and when she was given one, another firefighter said she might want to wash it because other firefighters had ejaculated on it.

“I myself looked into the allegation made by Brenda as of late about the conversation when she went to get a nomax hood there were five people present including Brenda when it happened (excluding myself) and there’s no proof as to the exact wording but there was a conversation some words were confirmed some words were left out so in my opinion it’s he said she said so everybody is open to their own opinion,” Snow wrote. “But knowing everybody involved I don’t think for one second was there harassment.”

Snow also said that in his view, Seymour was not bothered by another incident in which a pornographic video was played as part of a firefighter training session.

“Brenda and her husband were at the training session sat side by side,” he said. “Jokes and comments were made by ALL!! In no way was it directed to Brenda in any way.”

All of this came just a couple hours after the mayor of Spaniard’s Bay issued a news release formally apologizing to Seymour for how she was treated.

“On behalf of the Spaniard’s Bay Town Council, I apologize to Mrs. Brenda Symour for instances of sexual harassment which she has endured,” Mayor Tony Menchions said in a news release. “We do not condone, nor tolerate any such behaviour.”

Seymour said that she accepts the town’s apology.

“It exonerates me in the public eye to some extent,” Seymour told The Compass, the weekly newspaper in the area. “I’m quite pleased with it.”

Menchions said the town has adopted a zero-tolerance policy on harassment. His news release also said the town is accepting applications for new firefighters after the majority of the fire department resigned en masse, protesting Seymour’s actions.

Snow appears to be one of the firefighters who resigned, based on information he posted on Facebook.

Snow said he believes that all of the central players in the controversy need to take a step back, including Seymour and her husband.

“In my opinion I firmly believe that Ms Collins, Chief Hiscock, firefighter Vince Hiscock, firefighter Brenda Seymour and firefighter Martin Seymour be placed on temporary leave of absence from all positions until the allegations and legal proceedings end, upon completion of those matters then shall any or all persons be dealt with accordingly,” he wrote. “Allow the firefighters to assume their roles and provide much needed service and council to resume their roles and run our beautiful town accordingly.”

Among more than 40 replies to his post — mostly supporting Snow — one person wrote, “Well done Ross Snow sorry it had to come to this can the fire men who resined (sic) rejoin hope so ye was all good at your job and it would be a bad day for spaniards bay (sic) if ye cant.”

Snow replied, saying, “Yes we are all allowed to rejoin.”

To X-fireperson Snow - all the women and men with bollocks have spoken - so hang your head with shame and melt away. To Brenda - we can do this Brenda, don't quit, let the law take it's course - nothing like a good law suite to smarten up cowards and misogynist - It's all about power and control As a former correctional officer in a male maximum prison, I wanted a piece of the lucrative (salary)pie and got it. Get a lawyer and sue - Good men will thank you.

I read Ross Snow’s post and the comments. It appears that some of the people in Spaniards Bay have learned nothing from this. Even after the apology, it seems they still do not understand how wrong this was. One part not mentioned in the news article that he writes is that years ago another woman wanted to join and there was media surrounding it so they had to hire her. They then came up with a brilliant scheme, they would hire Brenda until the media died down and then Brenda would resign. Brenda and the other female did not get along and the other woman quit. Brenda didn’t. Seems like there were other confrontations with her. She also had issues with another Council woman who resigned. The comments from his supporter are also enlightening. Brenda should apologize to the town for the "shit storm", Brenda should apologize to the other council member, and the town only apologized to get the media to die down. All the firefighters who quit are welcome back. WOW! The idea of hiring a woman to get media to go away shows that their discriminatory practices towards women was alive and well years ago. How sad that Brenda didn’t bend to their will back then and resign like a good little girl. So, even if everything they say about Brenda is true, it does not explain/excuse the issues here. It may show that the leadership needs education on how to manage different personalities. It may show that Brenda needs education on working with others and teamwork. However, even if she did laugh at the porn (probably very awkward and not sure how to react in the moment and I doubt that she did), it does not excuse that it was played and it does not mean it wasn’t harassing. It was. Period. Weather “the words” said about her balaclava were intended to be harassing or not, they were. Period. Suggesting that she be placed on leave, that she apologize for causing the storm is just insane. It is victim blaming and victim punishing. A great message to send to the females of the town...they should just learn to take it I guess. Disgusting. I hope they continue to post garbage such as his post. It just makes her case that much stronger and shows that the apology wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. They should hang their heads in shame, learn the meaning on Harassment and, for God's sake, send a better message to their daughters!!!! How can they hire back those men (especially Ross Snow after these comments) and expect that they will work with her and not have future issues? The town has stated that they have implemented a zero tolerance policy. If that is correct, then Ross Snow’s post should absolutely remove him from ever being a member

What happened to the original article that was sat this link saying that the fire dept. voted the qualified woman from Alberta not be hired because she wasn't from Newfoundland?

This whole town needs to learn all about sexual harassment including the firefighters, the mayor, the town council members and every single parent, wives and fathers, whose child was involved in the rally supporting these firefighters actions as well as all of the children, especially those at the rally. It's very sad to see these children being taught that it's okay sexually harass a woman, they will grow up believing this acceptable and the cycle will never stop.

A walk down Memory Lane. Spaniard's Bay History? It was a much divided/ bigoted town in the 1800's forward and NL history notes it as a place of religious riots and hated divides etc. It was never a homogeneous community at any time and that is confirmed again today by the conduct of its stellar citizens. Premier Balls would show leadership in taking all these little town holes and putting them together under the Municipality of Bay Roberts, A REAL Prosperous, Growing and Loving Town'' All is well as they are on stand by which tells you the few shantys in Spaniards Bay are Not at Risk. Thank you

Ross Snow needs to step aside permanently! He seen Ms. Seymour and her husband laughing at the porn. Ms. Seymour stated her husband was not even in the province let alone sitting with her watching this porn. If what she said is true, than why would Ross Snow make such a statement?

  • Melissa
    January 27, 2016 - 11:42

Again - crack shot journalism from the media in this province. You have succeeded in making a headline attention grabbing and completely taking it out of context. Mr. Snow suggested the resignation of ALL parties involved including the mayor, the Councillor who resigned, the fire chief, his son, and Ms. Seymour's husband - not just Ms. Seymour. While you were decent enough to post the full wording in the last part of his post, you didn't need to keep up the crap of posting a misleading headline to continue the attention this is getting for all the wrong reasons! You also failed to mention that his post goes into detail about a lot of things that have, IMO, have been left out of the story or twisted by the media and Ms. Seymour herself. It sheds quite the light on the whole debacle and it's just tabloid journalism if you leave that out!

    • Millie Vokey
      January 27, 2016 - 12:29

Melissa how can you blame this on the media and the journalist. Spaniards bay residents, the mayor, the Councilors, the firefighters have put their own words all over social media for everyone to form their own opinions. As someone suggested they have made a great lawsuit AGAINST themselves.

    • Joe
      January 27, 2016 - 20:35

Melissa: The people who are coming to the defence of the fire department are giving the impression they agree with one side. The leadership should have solved the issue in the proper way so the general public would not know about it. When the truth comes out about whether Ms Seymour's husband was at the session where the porn clip was shown, we will know who to believe.

I really hope you don't have children - your ignorant attitude needs to be extinguished, not passed on to the next generation. It doesn't matter if the woman is disliked by the entire bustling metropolis of Spaniard's Bay - she doesn't deserve to be exposed to sexual harassment in the work place. What is wrong with some of you people. It's an embarrassment to the entire province of NL.

Any material shown to a group that depicts a naked man or a naked women engaged in sexual behaviors is sexual harassment. The males in the room should have felt uncomfortable not just the lone female. It was the material shown not the audience. Knowing groups of any sort think a joke is a women using her vaginia to put out a fire is very offensive to me. I am a nurse and for me to watch a clip of a males penis healing sick people would be offensive. Professionalism mean anything to these people.

This whole issue is an embarrassment and complete black eye to NL as a Province. Obviously, the Mayor, as the Municipal leader, does not have the skills required for the job, when something like this gets so out of control. NL is truly about 25 years behind the rest of Canada in most things (e.g. our nickel and dime Provincial 911 service), but this issue sure brings the backward thinking of these people to the forefront...excepting Ms. Seymour. This Neanderthal attitude is a major contributor to our negative image outside the Province. It is amazing how many comments these kind of stories attract, when there are many, many more serious issues facing our little Province, that very few seem to bother about. No wonder we are virtually bankrupt!

I read Mr Snows letter on Facebook. I thought it was a bit rambling. Lets assume that Ms Seymour was a problem in the fire department and/ or town council. If that were the case, the council and fire dept certainly went about it the wrong way. You don't solve problems with women by making sexual remarks and showing porn clips Time to set up an arms length commissioner to solve the problem so the people can live in peace.

I hear so often about the real story and when it comes out. It really needs to come out. All the facebook posts that harass and slander this woman are potentially evidence in a liable and slander case. Any lie (Mr. snow that has been put forward and causes any stress or undue loss to this woman is a great law suit. I would over to be the lawyer handling the case. Every lie and comment that can't be backed up is evidence so be very careful what you write(Mr. snow). I hope she is saving every post that proves she is still being harassed.

    January 27, 2016 - 10:13

The Snow post did not make this any better for the community or the parties involved. Instead it shed a brighter light on the approach of not quite understanding what harassment is about nor about understanding the consequences of threats made against against someone in social media (the "private" chatroom). They should just stop talking as it continues to make the community look bad.

Mr Snow should have watched the CBC interview with Ms Seymour last night, her husband was not there the day they showed the porn, he was out of town. That night after the video she phoned him to let him know what happened. Mr Snow is playing the game of , if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe you. Mr Snow , grow up and get a set !!! do the right thing, if you actually do know what that is, take down this stupid lie of a FB site.

The Town of Spaniard's Bay has been torn apart. There is so much hatred & bitterness between people and to top it all off, it just seems to be getting started. I really believe that there has to be a way to bring this to a close. From some of the comments, it appears we are dealing with a lot of very upset & hurt people, rightly so on both sides but that does not make it right to continue to slander people in this situation. Everyone seems to be focusing on this video but really there are many issues here. These firemen involved are all good friends... surely they are going to have each other's back but I have to wonder why do they feel their supposed actions & comments to Mrs. Seymour over the years have been ok. In saying that, did Mrs. Seymour not know the possible fallout from overstepping her boundaries as councillor and going above the fire dept. liaison with her complaints? This has become an absolute circus, everyday there is something new coming to light. The town apologized (guilty or not), she accepted. It's time to try to put this behind them, learn a BIG lesson from it and move on. Right now the town is without fire protection, people are at each other's throats and there are a lot of hurt feelings among the residents. This situation is between the firemen that resigned, the town and Mrs. Seymour, no one else should be involved. It's time for everyone to start to come together and try to rebuild their town. I hope that this gets resolved soon before something terrible happens. Also, as a side note - whenever you post something on a social media outlet, it becomes public information that can, and will be used against you legally. So people need to be very cautious in their wording or they could find themselves in a heap of trouble.

      January 27, 2016 - 08:40

Snow doesn't realize how sexist he is and certainly doesn't understand sexual harassment. Imagine saying wash the balaclava because someone ejaculated on it. I'm sure the guy who said it used the word"ejaculate" You are making Spaniards Bay a disgrace nationally. Your best bet is to shut up because the more you say the bigger the hole you are digging for yourselves. Ms Seymour said on tv her husband wasn't at the training session where the porn was shown. Showing porn in a mixed professional group shows your mentality.

As if this situation was not bad enough but now they want to punish the victim and go about it in a public way. They are lucky it is Ms. Seymour and not me they are dealing with. I am less forgiving and my lawyer and I would turn this into a hit on their bank account. I would definitely sue each person who's mouth opened and supported this behaviour . From the firemen to their wives and their supporters. Not hard to make a list of names and addresses in a little town. Consider yourselves lucky I would launch a campaign for justice and you people would pay every single one. Then maybe a light bulb would come on and the 21st century would arrive to your town.

What an embarrassment to Newfoundland that they can't see past a woman in the fire department. They should take some lessons from all the other fire departments in the province where the women and men work hand in hand! I read the original and it gives a much better view and is well wrote. Bottom line, classic case of two wrongs. She tried to cause trouble by harassing people, going over the chief's head got stuff, pushing her personal agenda, etc. I don't know any parties involved, but I think both sides have behaved porrly.

    • Lynn
      January 27, 2016 - 10:33

But how do you know that what Snow wrote is actually true, regarding Seymour going over the chief's head, harassing people, pushing a personal agenda? I for one wouldn't trust a word the man wrote, considering how he handle the so-called "investigation" he conducted and concluded because he knew the people involved it just couldn't be harassment against her? Yeah, right. He sounds EXACTLY like someone who you can trust to lay out the accurate picture of what went on.

    • Brad
      January 27, 2016 - 11:28

And you think for one second that what Ms. Seymour saying isn't true either? Can't have your cake and eat it too. Unfortunately, people emotionally jump on the lynch mob bandwagon, and if you disagree with them, you are automatically a sexist pig.

    January 26, 2016 - 18:37

Mr. Snow, open mouth, insert foot. your a firefighter, when a fire is burning out, being controlled, don't pour gas on it and expect it to go out. While I don't have first knowledge of Ms Semours' competence as a firefighter, credentials alone are not a replacement for experience, you don't treat anybody the way she was treated. The way I see it, as soon as Ms. Semore was elected to council, ground rules have to be in place so everyone involved understands the process, if there was not one in place then that's the fault of both the Town and Municipal affairs. If there was a process and it was not followed by Ms. Semore then that's on her. However the most important part of this ,there should be a clear process for anyone who feels they are being harassed/ decriminated against and it should be investigated by an outside group, not by someone in the same department.

Snow is one of the firefighters who resigned en-mass in misguided support of their fire chief. Whoever appointed him to investigate, has no interest in changing the prejudicial viewpoint of the current fire department. This man has no business saying anything on behalf of anyone, he is part of the problem. All of the firefighters who resigned in support of the former chief and the former chief himself should be restricted from re-applying to the fire department in Spaniards Bay. If these fellows want to fight fires and save lives they will have to learn that the population they work for will not tolerate sexual discrimination, or sexual harassment of anyone anywhere ever.

While I'm ashamed of the actions of these firefighters, what has shocked me the most is the rushing to aid them by the community of Spaniard's Bay and the totally biased journalism by the CBN Compass. While every other news outlet in Canada is either reporting this without bias or seeing it as discrimination as outlined by NL Human Rights Policy, the CBN compass has churned out articles that convey support of the resigned fire fighters who, rather than take accountability and attend sensitivity training, decided to take the entire town of Spaniard's Bay hostage. I wonder if Newfoundland has to set aside budget money for the treatment of Stockholme syndrome.

  • Incorrect and misleading title
    January 26, 2016 - 16:17

This man resigned. He is not a Spaniards Bay firefighter anymore. Please correct this as it is VERY misleading...or was this intended to just fan the flames by making it look official? He is just a normal citizen now; HE RESIGNED!

    January 26, 2016 - 16:10

Seriously? The person that has been on the receiving end of the harassment is asked to step aside to investigate the allegations? What rock did you just crawl out from under. None of the people who resigned should be allowed back but not the victim of this. I have never felt so embarassed for people as I do for you men who want the "good ole boys club" to stay and not open it to women and then treat them with respect. Some words were said and others weren't so it's he said she said? No wonder the department is like it is. Grow up

  • What a dumbass
    January 26, 2016 - 16:05

Wow, this clown just doesn't get it. And he's already taken a side but is trying to pretend that he is being unbiased. If these clowns don't get it now then they never will. To top it off they put their community at risk when they stormed off in their temper tantrum. Kick them to the curb where they belong. Geez, what kind of community do they have out there.

Snow is behind the times. the SB Town Council has today issued Ms Seymour an official , written, apology for sexual harrassement that she endured. If that's not an admission of guilt, what is.

    • Paul
      January 27, 2016 - 08:16

Sorry..What's this 'sexual harassment' she endured? Was it a video showing violent sexual behaviour against women? Or perhaps it was simply a porn video showing sexual acts? You don't think women watch porn videos and because they're played, they're sexual harassment against women? So if the video shows sex between consensual adults it's still considered sexual harassment for the woman but not the man? Who's behind the times now? Of course it's inappropriate, and not allowed, to show videos of any form of sexual acts in a workplace. That's a given and should be handled accordingly(although almost 2 years later?). Deeming it as sexual harassment to the woman because she viewed it is pretty much saying she was the one offended because she was female. How silly. People need education on what sexual harassment actual is and it goes both ways, There must be a lot missing from the reports I see. What are these 'sexist remarks' people keep talking about? I'm trying to understand what all the fuss is it simply the video or is Ms Seymour making a fuss to cover up something else that's going on..perhaps in council? Is she simply tired of inaction on other issues that we aren't aware of? Seems fishy to me. The inappropriate video is the easy part. .

      January 27, 2016 - 11:09

@Paul - if you haven't been following all the facts, espcially the incident with the Nomax Hood, perhaps it's best not to comment. And to answer your questions. Yes it is harrassment and also sexism.

    • wow
      January 27, 2016 - 23:13

Wow Paul - here's some information for you, it's a pretty straight forward concept, I'm sure a 5year old would understand. PLAYING PORNOGRAPHY IN THE WORK PLACE IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT. End of story - this is not even up for debate. Go back and collect your high school education.

Snow failed to explain how and why anyone thought the porno, or the semen joke were in any way appropriate. If his story had any validity, he would be showing the media letters to support his claims. His elaborate story reeks of gossip - a men's club fearing a woman who stands up for her rights.

    • John
      January 27, 2016 - 07:53

I did read it, aside from being next to impossible to understand because of the poor writing, it backs up everything this article is saying about it. There are two sides to every story, but so far the other side is either saying absolutely nothing, or, "there's two sides to every story" without backing that up. The fact remains that porn was played during a training session, and people are still making excuses for it, it's pathetic.

Just read the post and here is what I gather from it. The fire department attempted to kick Ms. Seymour out of the fire department for "breaking chain of command". There was an inquiry and the fire department was obviously told that they were wrong for removing Ms. Seymour from the Fire Department because she resumed her role in the department, with no discipline. Fire Department was also told to throw out their constitution. Hilarious! Then the training video incident happened and then the issue with the nomax hood. The fire department, in its infinite wisdom, elected one of their own to complete the investigation and SURPRISE SURPRISE! we get this "But knowing everyone involved I don't think for one second was there harassment". How was a member of the fire department, who clearly had issues with Ms. Seymour prior, allowed to investigate the alleged claim of harrasmment against his buddies? How was a person, who clearly has no understanding of what is an what is not harassment allowed to investigate an incident of harassment? These "firefighters" are better off keeping their mouths shut. Post like those from Ross Snow are not helping their cause and the people who like and offer support on Facebook are no better.

      January 26, 2016 - 18:26

Totally agree... fox guarding the hen house. This was a chance to move forward and then Ross pulls this stunt. I'd say that after undermining the Council... then he should step aside permanently.

    January 26, 2016 - 14:13

This is simply amazing to me. Because the woman sat through that video and seemed unaffected by it doesn't mean it was okay. She could have been in shock, or maybe she was trying to put on a good front to avoid an uncomfortable situation. Just because nobody ranted and roared during the training doesn't mean it's okay! Furthermore, to say Brenda and her husband (what he has to do with this is anybody's guess) should be placed on leave is just beyond me. So remove her (further victimize her - isolate her) until legal proceedings end. You'll have to tell me, Mr. Snow, what is it she is being punished for? For speaking out against very inappropriate activities taking place in Spaniard's Bay? You don't punish/victimize a person who is brave enough to come forward. You may not agree with her approach, but uncovering these major concerns got her an apology from the Town so that should tell you something.

  • Joanne
    January 26, 2016 - 14:13

I was so pleased to read that finally someone stepped up to apologise to Mrs. Seymour, and then I read this "boys club" post, and realize, the apology was clearly just lip service. (I hope I'm wrong with that statement and that at least the leader (mayor) of SB does in fact get it) You can't change won't you don't acknowledge, and clearly Mr. Snow is not acknowledging that he has no idea (or at least a very limited idea) of what sexual harassment is. Mr. Snow, get some sexual harassment training, your ignorance on the matter is overwhelming. And may I also suggests that no one be permitted on the SB fire department without respectful workplace training. Way to go SB, take 1 step forward with the Mayor's apology and 2 steps backward with this story.

      January 26, 2016 - 14:38

I know, eh? The Town of Spaniard's Bay came out and offered Ms. Seymour an apology and that would have been such a positive headline to go across Canada and beyond and then this... :(.

    January 26, 2016 - 14:13

Thanks for the Snow job! Rather than clear the air by having Seymour leave, why don't we clear it even more by asking Snow and all those neanderthal firefighters who agree with him to leave instead. Sounds like a plan!

"Snow also said that in his view, Seymour was not bothered by another incident where a pornographic video was played as part of a firefighter training session." So playing pornographic videos is commonplace at SBFD?? How sad is that!

  • Bill
    January 26, 2016 - 14:11

Time for Ross Snow to take a leave to undergo sensitivity training and a course about having a harassment free workplace. How dare he say that Ms. Seymour was not bothered by the incident of the pornographic video? In fact none of these firefighters should be permitted to return to the fire service until they have all undergone a course in sensitivity training.

    January 26, 2016 - 14:06

More excuses and still zero accountability. “But knowing everybody involved I don't think for one second was there harassment.” Translation "My friends wouldn't harass anybody" “Jokes and comments were made by ALL !! In no way was it directed to Brenda in any way.” Translation "There porn was just a joke so therefor it wasn't a problem at all" It's like watching a 5 year old deny he ate the candy bar even though he has chocolate all over his face.

  • Wanda White
    January 26, 2016 - 14:04

Under the law any comment (written or spoken), action that is unwanted : harassment may be considered illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted, or when the victim decides to quit the job). In short , ANY actions, verbal or otherwise, that is not welcomed by any person is deemed offensive. The workplace is not the place for porn! Nor should Ms. Seymour or anyone else be subjected to the same

Well said Ross, it is a great idea and I really think that's the way the Town should go with this until it's delt with! There is ALOT that isn't coming out here. Ms. Collins needs to tell her side yet. Right now this is all about Seymour!! I suspect next the Town will be suede!!!

The accuser and the accused should step aside until the investigation is complete, including Seymour. Too much speculation, finger pointing, and assumptions, when, in reality, only those involved know just what went on.

Thank god someone spoke up and printed some good thoughts. Good on you for coming forward with a plan as god forbid anyone else drafting up something sensible. A true leader there. As FF, hats off, your boys and girls should be proud of you coming forward. I am waiting to see some truth as having women in fire halls, no diff than the boys...I agree with you she played along and her spouse was in the room. It is a beauty contest...your in the click or you are out...same all across Canada. Think about it.

      January 27, 2016 - 07:54

Volly, we know what side you are on. Did you watch the CBC interview last night, Mr Snow and others have said the Seymour and her husband were present for the porn video, which is a lie, Mr. Seymour was not present and was out of town when this went on, because when she got home she phoned him to tell him what happened. So if you repeat a lie often enough some fools will believe it. And Volly you are a fool , but don't let that keep you from repeating the lie.
