Cpl. Dave Cooper, Burgeo RCMP detachment commander, said there has been a successful conclusion to the report of four snowmobilers overdue in the area.

He said early this morning the weather improved, which allowed personnel with Barachois Search and Rescue the opportunity to commence a ground search.

An aerial search was to be commenced shortly after with a helicopter provided by Fire and Emergency Services NL and a Cormorant helicopter from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Nova Scotia, which was in the area for scheduled training.

However, before that search started the four snowmobilers arrived at the Search and Rescue Command Post set up in Peter Strides at 9 a.m. today and all appeared to be in good condition. They told police they had located a cabin in the Princess Lake area, west of Peter Strides, where they remained for two nights until the weather improved.

The RCMP remind the public to be aware of weather forecasts, travel with sufficient supplies and file a travel plan with families or friends in case bad weather is encountered.

Cooper said a satellite phone or other means of communication can come in handy when needed.

The Bay St. George RCMP provided assistance to Burgeo RCMP.

Previous: A search for four overdue male snowmobilers from St. Alban’s was being organized on Monday afternoon.

The Bay St. George RCMP detachment received a report of the overdue male snowmobilers, who were last seen at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday between Peter Strides Lake and Scotts Lake on the South West Coast of Newfoundland, about an hour North of Burgeo.

The men were on their way to Isle aux Morts and were expected to arrive in that community on Sunday evening.

The Barachois Search and Rescue Team were notified but due to inclement weather their efforts are being delayed. The Department of Transportation has issued an advisory that they were taking their equipment off the road at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening.

The men are known to be experienced travelers. The Stephenville and Burgeo RCMP are monitoring the situation and the weather, while plans are being made for locating the men.

If anyone has any information regarding the location of these snowmobilers, please contact your local RCMP Detachment or Stephenville RCMP at (709) 643-2119 and Burgeo RCMP at 709-886-2241.

Previous: Cpl. Richard Basha of the Bay St. George RCMP said a search is on for four missing snowmobilers.

He said the men, who left St. Alban’s on the weekend en route to Isle aux Morts, were last seen in the Peter Stride’s Lake area off Burgeo Road, but that was more than 24 hours ago.

Basha said more information would be released as the search progresses.

Geographic location: Isle aux Morts, Burgeo Road
