Premier Danny Williams has received a 78 per cent approval rating in the latest Angus Reid public opinion poll, giving him the distinction of being "the highest ranked provincial head of government" in Canada.

The online survey involved a representative national sample of 7,000 Canadians, with large sample sizes in nine provinces.

Williams received approval from more than three in four respondents, with 10 per cent disapproving and 12 per cent saying they weren't sure.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall was ranked second, with a 58 per cent approval rating, followed by Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter with 43 per cent.

The approval rating for Manitoba's Greg Selinger was 29 per cent while the disapproval rating for the remaining five premiers surpassed the 50 per cent mark.

Quebec Premier Jean Charest received a positive review from only 25 per cent of respondents, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell received a 21 per cent approval rating and New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham got 20 per cent.

The Canadian premiers with the lowest approval ratings were Ontario's Dalton McGuinty at 18 per cent and Alberta's Ed Stelmach with 14 per cent.

Williams approval rating was actually up one per cent from a similar poll conducted in August, while Wall and Dexter's approval ratings dropped slightly.

Alex Marland, an assistant professor with Memorial University's political science department, said Wednesday what he finds notable in the latest poll is Williams is still getting such high approval numbers so far into his term in office.

Wall and Dexter are still in their honeymoon period, Marland said, but it's not like Williams was elected in the last year.

"So that, right away, tells you that Danny Williams is not only achieving very high highs, but he's doing it for a long period of time."

Marland believes it also says something about this province because if you look at the demographics in Newfoundland and Labrador, most people are not that diverse in their opinions and people in the province have often rallied behind a premier to be sort of a super hero or saviour.

"Demographically, if you look at language, if you look at all sorts of things, it's a very homogenous population, and so there's not this wide variety of viewpoints," Marland said.

He also believes Williams gets people onside with him because he promotes a stronger economy that's going to benefit all of Newfoundland and Labrador and that resonates with people.

"It's something in political science we call economic regionalism," he said, explaining Williams is seen as somebody who's not trying to favour any particular group. "It's almost like he's trying to help out the Newfoundland society as a whole," Marland said.

Williams has also learned to target his anger and desire for reform against outsiders, he said, like Hydro-Quebec, New Brunswick or Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as opposed to people in the province.

Williams' popularity levels were actually tied with the Liberals for much of 2004, Marland said, and 2004 is really the only year that he was focusing on internal reform and making changes.

"I would say that it would be very hard for him to sustain those levels if he was actually saying to Newfoundlanders, 'Look, we've got to make all sorts of cuts because we've got a deficit.' All of a sudden Newfoundlanders would be very upset."

Marland said Williams' popularity also probably speaks to the lack of support for the alternative, "so it kind of says something bad about the Liberals or NDP."

He said Williams is seen to be actually representing citizens' concerns and a lot of people like him and put "an incredible amount of trust" in him.

"Polls are bearing that out and election campaigns," he said.

"Yes, the man makes mistakes, but the reality is most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians like and trust Danny Williams to represent their interests."

George: I assume, and I'm sure you'll correct me if that's the case, that you meant lies and corruption? I am STILL waiting for ONE example with a documented outcome that illustrates this. If you claim lies and corruption, surely you can provide ONE example of such? The numbers that are 'not always what they appear to be' also exist on the Liberal side in Yvonne's support for the leadership role. Do these numbers only reflect the support she'd 'like' to see? Should we consider this support a manipulation of numbers as well, or does that only exist in the PC party?

I predict that Williams supporters will enjoy the ride until he decides he doesn't want the premier's chair anymore. Yvonne has made the next election that much easier. I also predict Mr. Dean will be turfed, but I'm not sure this will be enough to make the career politician that is Yvonne Jones leave politics....maybe, lol, but it would mean leaving her lucrative career behind.

I agree that Williams is an opportunist and I agree that he could have just as easily been a Liberal if they had been more cooperative instead of combative. I'm sure Williams doesn't care and as far as the Liberals are concerned, it's their loss, lol. All he wanted was a position in control where he could make 'no more giveaways' the way NL would be seen by the country and the world - on a go forward basis, lol.

Most people can see that Danny Williams is out to help his own people. His demeanor and record shows that. He is far from perfect and there will always be the naysayers and even those who hate him. Jealousy is a real trickster. I know he has admirers in Ontario and elsewhere, but don't let that go to your head Danny, keep a good balance and continue to work for the common good and keep fighting those greedy mult-nationals and crooks like HQ.

It is a testiment to the hard work and dedication that Premier Williams has put into his post. Newfoundlanders are far from gulible and we are now seeing the path for province unfold into a stronger, contributing member of confederation with or without the approval of the current federal Government. Poll results, you can take them or leave them. As with anything in statistics, you can twist the numbers however you want them to look but you cannot deny the positive contribution of Mr. Williams to this great province of ours! Way to go Danny! You make us all proud to be Newoundlander and Labradorians!

While I jump on haters all the time because they do not quantify the things they say, stories like this are proof that the achievements of a government standing for it's people is exactly what the people want to see. It doesn't really matter, the content of regularly posted, unquantifiable comments. It's too bad so many of the supportive 80% have to work so hard everyday and they don't have the relaxing luxury of sitting in front of their pc's and posting supportive comments like the one's many of them have probably been reading quickly and nodding in agreement with here tonight - before they did homework and got the kids ready for bed. It's so refreshing to see supporters commenting here, quantifying their statements directly through the direction they see the province headed in, and dominating, like the majority should be, lol.

That answers that question. He gets his popularity from people outside this province who are polled by Angus Reid and the handfull that are actually polled right here. I admire a lot of things Prime Minister Harper has done and compared to the alternative Iggie he looks good. That is exactly the Williams claim to fame.

No matter how you cut it, Danny's here, he's in your face, he's the premier and he's staying. It seems his reputation precedes him all across Canada.

BTW - that poll included the results for other premiers in the same way but none garnish the admiration of Danny.

He's a HUGE SUCCESS and no one can even come close. No one else can even show up on the radar screen he's that far ahead.

That's all that needs to be said. Really. There he is, in your face, and there's nothing the danny-haters can do about it. There's the proof ONCE AGAIN. I've said this before and this is just MORE PROOF.

I regularly complete Angus Reid Polls and I happen to think Mr. Williams is doing a fine job. There is no way to satisify all Newfoundlanders - they enjoy complaining too much.

They must've taken the poll around St. John's. He is certainly not liked in Rural Newfoundland and Labrador. That is where Danny got two resounding election wins and another one if he runs again. Danny just got an early Christmas gift when Yvonne said she would be seeking the Liberal leadership. If we look closely at the competition to give a mark of approval there's not much there to pick from ...to carry such a provincial responsibility. Back in 1999 everyone was begging Danny Williams to become the next Premier, begging!

People were excited...but for the wrong reasons.

They expected Danny to solve their problems, one by one.

Maybe if the Danny naysayers actually contributed and did something to improve their situation they would leave Danny alone.

Then again, it's easier to blame someone you've never met, never spoke with for all your lifes problems isn't it.

That answers that question. He gets his popularity from people outside this province who are polled by Angus Reid and the handfull that are actually polled right here. I admire a lot of things Prime Minister Harper has done and compared to the alternative Iggie he looks good. That is exactly the Williams claim to fame.

The MUN professor is surprised that Danny is doing so well at 78 %. Well this professor should have a look at the Opposition Parties, and he will wonder as I do, WHY ONLY 78%, why not 99% ? The current OPPOSITION is Danny's biggest assets.!

Most dictators have high approval ratings. It's kinda inherent in that, innit?

No matter how you cut it, Danny's here, he's in your face, he's the premier and he's staying. It seems his reputation precedes him all across Canada.

BTW - that poll included the results for other premiers in the same way but none garnish the admiration of Danny.

He's a HUGE SUCCESS and no one can even come close. No one else can even show up on the radar screen he's that far ahead.

That's all that needs to be said. Really. There he is, in your face, and there's nothing the danny-haters can do about it. There's the proof ONCE AGAIN. I've said this before and this is just MORE PROOF.

    Beautiful, I love it.

I was asked. And I responded. Perhaps if some of you complainers stopped waiting for someone to phone you and joined an online survey group your opinions would be heard too. I regularly complete Angus Reid Polls and I happen to think Mr. Williams is doing a fine job. There is no way to satisify all Newfoundlanders - they enjoy complaining too much.

George bye lets play your silly little game. Throw out the Angus Reid poll because you say its just its only manipulation of numbers. How blind the liberals are because they buy them too. Just want your intelligent spin on how the the P.C.s , according to your reasoning never got the votes but still won two massive provincial elections? We are all on the edge of our seats to hear this. Its got to be the biggest news story since the selling off of our power to Quebec!!!

They are polling his buddies and people who he brainwashed. The low income, the disabled and seniors never get a poll call on him. This goes to show that only phone numbers on this poll is from select areas like King William Estates, Country Gardens and so on.

The late Rt. Honourable John Diefenbaker, former Prime Minister of Canada once remarked,Polls (poles) are only for dogs to pee on or pee up.

They must've taken the poll around St. John's. He is certainly not liked in Rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Interesting to note that this poll would be published when Yvonne Jones just made public her decision to run in the Leadership campaign for the Liberal Party Of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Bravo Yvonne, I will be there for you. Danny must be getting cold feet again.

Phoebe, I've been giving you way too much credit. I thought you realized that you have to be residing in NL to vote in a provincial election. That is where Danny got two resounding election wins and another one if he runs again. Danny just got an early Christmas gift when Yvonne said she would be seeking the Liberal leadership. Even without asking Yvonne Jones helps him out yet again.

I have no problem supporting Premier Danny Williams. He has... and still is a good Premier... A peoples Premier. Any province would love to have him . If we look closely at the competition to give a mark of approval there's not much there to pick from ...to carry such a provincial responsibility. Our province is gradually being pulled up by the boot strap from the mire that it was trapped in for a long time. Thank You!

It's nice to see the rest of the country understands and apprciates our premier as much as we do, or at least 80% of us do.

    Telling it like it is
    - July 1, 2010 at 21:13:03

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
