The state of the Newfoundland fishery will be high on the agenda when provincial and federal ministers responsible for the troubled industry meet on Saturday in this province.
Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, will be in the province to attend the annual meeting of the Fur Institute of Canada.
During her visit, she will meet with Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
There will be plenty to talk about, Jackman said in a news release today.
Recent concerns with the seal population, controversial quota cuts on the Northern Peninsula, challenges in the lobster harvest and ongoing efforts to restructure the fishing industry will be discussed, Jackman said.
"I had previously asked for meetings with the minister on several issues of importance in relation to federal fisheries policies. These are issues that will affect the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador over the long-term," Jackman stated.
Jackman said he expects "significant" developments in the restructuring process - also known as the fisheries MOU - in the next month.
"The provincial government will bring proposals resulting from the MOU process forward to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans in the coming months," Jackman said.
"We will continue to press the federal government to address our issues and concerns in a timely and effective manner."
