The provincial government announced today it will invest $532,888 in the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE), under the Self-Employment Assistance program (SEA).
According to a news release, the SEA is an employment program that provides financial and entrepreneurial assistance to eligible individuals aimed at helping themselves through starting a business.
"The provincial government is fully committed to working with female entrepreneurs to help them realize their full potential," Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, said.
"Through the Self-Employment Assistance program, we will help women throughout the province develop their business ideas, provide support in the first year of business operation, and remove barriers to ensure they can fully participate in our growing business sectors."
NLOWE has been working with women who are starting or growing businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 12 years. Since 1997, it has assisted more than 6,000 clients start more than 800 new businesses, and created over 1,700 new employment positions throughout the province.
"NLOWE helps women in Newfoundland and Labrador stand out in the entrepreneurial world by providing its clients and members with access to funding as well as opportunities for networking, mentoring and professional development," said Nena Abundo, NLOWE Executive Director. "The Self-Employment Assistance program is a valuable tool for NLOWE as we work with women to help them start successful and sustainable businesses. We are grateful for the continued support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as its ongoing commitment to NLOWE and women in business."

The SEA program is already being delivered across NL to both Men AND women. It has been a great program for many years. Why they suddenly see the need for duplication to 'women only' is odd to me. Perhaps this Gov't likes to spend money where it doesn't need to go? Sort of like setting up a 'women's only' line at the doctor's office or a 'female only' line at Tim Horton's. Makes no sense, but political motives seem to have overruled common sense again.

Again, another example of how we as a society are promoting the idea of differences between men and women in the work force. Why is a program such as this needed for women only. I personally think that woman have the upper hand today and its probably harder for a man to get a start in today's world. I think your program should help people with great ideas, not just women with great ideas!!!
