A 19-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy are charged with theft of a boat after the two launched the boat in Lady Lake in Harbour Grace Sunday evening without permission and ended up having to be rescued by the local fire department.
When RCMP arrived at the scene officers learned the 14-foot fibreglass boat - used by the Harbour Grace Regatta Committee as a rescue boat during events - had been hauled up on shore and was allegedly taken by the two accused without permission. The two accused had been swimming in the lake prior to boarding the boat.
There was no motor on the boat, nor any oars.
When the two accused managed to get the boat on the lake, a breeze took them away from shore and they could not get back. Members of the Harbour Grace Fire Department assisted getting the boat back to shore.
The 13-year-old accused from Butlerville was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000. He was released into the custody of his parents to appear in Harbour Grace court Aug. 16.
The 19-year-old from Harbour Grace was arrested and held in custody to appear in provincial court in Harbour Grace today. He is charged with theft under $5,000, two counts of breach of probation and one count of breach of an undertaking.
