Richard Barbour, 39, of Southern Bay is facing charges in connection with a shooting incident July 2 the RCMP believe Barbour fabricated.
Barbour appeared in provincial court in Clarenville this afternoon on three charges: committing public mischief with intent to mislead, by causing a peace officer to enter on or continue an investigation by reporting that an offence has been committed when it has not; unlawfully using a firearm in a careless manner; and possession of a loaded, prohibited firearm.
Barbour told the RCMP that in the early morning hours of July 2 he had been the target of shots being fired - an incident that caused public concern throughout the area.
The RCMP say their investigation indicates the accused has made up the entire incident.
The case has been set over to July 13 while Barbour undergoes a psychiatric assessment at the Waterford Hospital in St. John's.
