The RCMP in Nain released photos today of the area where a nine-year-old boy drowned Friday in a small pond at the southern end of the Labrador community while swimming.
RCMP officers were called to the scene about 5:30 p.m. Friday in an area known as the New Dam. The small pond at that location is used for the town water supply.
The name of the deceased will not be released at the request of the family.
RCMP say the nine-year-old boy was swimming with another nine-year-old relative when he went too far from shore in approximately 12 feet of water and drowned.
The boy had been submersed for approximately 30 minutes before he was located approximately 25 feet from shore by a local man who was part of a search effort by a number of locals.
Attempts to revive the boy at the scene and at the local clinic were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.
The matter remains under investigation.
RCMP and town officials remind the public the pond is designated as a "no swimming" area.
