While firefighters were dousing a car fire on the Paddy's Pond Access Road just outside St. John's late this afternoon, an accident occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway just a short distance away.
Ambulances were called to the scene and paramedics at this hour are assessing injured occupants of an SUV and the vehicle it apparently rear-ended near the access road turnoff.
The injuries do not appear to be of a serious nature.
Police officers from both the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the RCMP are on scene and traffic has been reduced to one lane in the west-bound highway.
When firefighters arrived at the location this afternoon, they found a car well alight. The cause of the fire is not known at this point, but there were no injuries in that incident.
