Edmonton -

An Alberta Mountie charged in the slaying of his wife has made his first court appearance on a charge of second-degree murder.
Const. Tirth Sehmbi, 36, was led into court dressed in the blue coveralls issued to all prisoners who are in custody.
He had been standing in the prisoner's box for just a few seconds when a judge agreed to a defence request to adjourn the case until Aug. 12.
The constable, who stood quietly with his hands folded, was then quickly led back into a prisoner's holding area.
Sehmbi was charged with murder over the weekend after the body of his wife was discovered in a southeast Edmonton home.
Neighbours say they heard what sounded like gunshots in the area early Saturday morning.
