Marystown native to represent Canada at 27th World Summer Universiade in Russia

Ryan Brockerville’s track and field career has taken the Marystown native far. He’ll be going a little further next month when he heads to Kazan, Russia, to represent Canada at the 27th World Summer Universiade July 6-17.

The ‘World University Games’, as it is also known, is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), and is the second largest sport participation event in the world, with more than 13,500 athletes from over 170 countries expected to participate this year.

Brockerville, who is fresh off his fifth overall victory at the CHCM Garnish-Frenchman’s Cove 10km Road Race this month, will compete in the 3,000-metre steeplechase, his premier event.

He topped his personal best to qualify for the Universiade at the 2013 USATF Oxy High Performance Meet in Los Angeles, California, last month.

“The standard to go was a time of 8:40 flat, and my previous best before that was 8:45:01. When I was in LA there three weeks ago or so, I ran 8:38:71. It was a pretty big race actually. It was stacked.”

Though his time made it all but a certainty, Brockerville acknowledged he kept quiet about his potential selection to the Canadian team until it was made official.

“I didn’t want to say anything right away because I didn’t want to jinx my chances.”

Speaking to The Gazette in Marystown Friday, he said he was getting ready to head to Halifax later that afternoon for this past Sunday’s ‘Aileen MeagherInternational Track Classic’, before heading to the Toronto International Track and Field Games today.

“I think we’re going to travel a little bit after that and try to find some races in Europe. It’s going to be great. Can’t wait!” – Ryan Brockerville

He will compete in the 1,500-metres at both events.

“Both are really, really big meets. I was really lucky to get into the one in Toronto.”

After another week back home, Brockerville, who is enrolled in the one-year education program at British Columbia’s Simon Fraser University for September, will travel to Moncton for the 2013 Canadian Track and Field Championships later this month. He’s planning to head to the country’s west coast for a brief sojourn before the trip overseas.

Brockerville won’t be alone in Russia – his girlfriend, Jessica Smith, who is also a track and field athlete specializing in the 800-metres, has made the Canadian team as well.

“I think we’re going to travel a little bit after that and try to find some races in Europe. It’s going to be great. Can’t wait!”
