No incidents after motorcycle gang meeting

The Outlaws Motorcycle Club, one of two outlaw motorcycle gangs that have a presence in Grand Falls-Windsor, held their annual national gathering in the region over the Canada Day weekend.

A national meeting of members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club near Grand Falls-Windsor resulted in no incidents, according to the local RCMP detachment.

Members of the '1%er' motorcycle gang from all over the country held their annual national run over the Canada Day weekend at a local amusement park, and though police were more than prepared, it was a quiet weekend.

"There were no incidents, and that's exactly what we anticipated," Corporal Mike Fewer with the Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP told the Advertiser.

He said because these sorts of gatherings garner so much police, public and media attention, attendees are generally on their best behaviour.

"(These individuals) have a right to assemble and they have right to socialize but we just want to make sure that it's done safely and no laws are broken," Fewer said.

Fewer said one of the main concerns surrounding outlaw motorcycle gang gatherings is often the members will flaunt breaking the highway traffic act, especially in large groups. Because Canada Day weekend is generally a busy one anyway, increased police presence on the Trans-Canada Highway was a must to ensure public safety.

He said the local detachment enlisted help from other departments both provincially and nationally for their monitoring over the weekend

"When we approach these things we use national strategies...they're monitored pretty much 24 hours a day by plain clothes members and uniformed members," he said. "What the public saw here in regards to police presence was the same application whether these things occur in Grand Falls-Windsor or Victoria, BC. Our number one concern is community safety"

In 2011, the Bacchus, another '1%er' motorcycle group, had a gathering near Grand Falls-Windsor, and there were no resulting incidents.
