Parking lot structure will be in business

Whether a restaurant, bank or clothing store, its owners recently contacted the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor to submit plans for redevelopment. Engineer Jeff Saunders knows who the mystery tenants are, but won't identify them until they are ready to open their business.

A partially-finished mystery building at the entrance to the Exploits Valley Mall parking lot will be the new home of - whatever.

The structure has prompted speculation since contractors started at work this past year. Around town, people wondered if it would be the site of a new fast food outlet, a bank or a clothing store.

But the contractors didn't finish the construction on the new building, and the mystery was not solved. Unfinished, the structure lies vacant with not even siding or a front façade.

Town Engineer Jeff Saunders said the building will be finished, and it will even have a tenant. However, he said he wasn't at liberty to say who the tenant will be or even the nature of the business taking it over.

"They (the owners) were working through the issues of trying to get someone to move in and take it over, and they've done that," he explained. "Now we're expecting some revised drawings in probably early August sometime."

The building will be redeveloped, and it is hoped that construction will start in the fall.

"They're hoping to have revised drawings in August, and construction starting the first week in September," added Saunders.

The Town's concern, according to him, was that after months of non-action, the building would be demolished. But it will be completed. Saunders said he only received confirmation from the owners Thursday.

While he could not confirm the nature of the business, he said it means economic development and jobs for people in the area.
