Don Coombs has confirmed he will seek the Liberal nomination for Carbonear-Harbour Grace

Former Harbour Grace mayor confirms he will seek Liberal nomination

It looks like there could be some contention for the Liberal nomination in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace provincial byelection.

Former Harbour Grace mayor Don Coombs has confirmed he will be seeking election in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace provincial byelection, but not as a Progressive Conservative as most assumed.

“I have given it a lot of thought,” Coombs said in a phone interview with The Compass. “Everyone just jumped to the conclusion that I would be running as a PC. I have weighed my options, and I believe the Liberal party is where I should be.”

When Jerome Kennedy resigned from the PC caucus last week, he left an open spot in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace region, one that Coombs believes he can fill.

Last week, Olympic gold medallist and Harbour Grace native Jamie Korab announced he was considering running after being approached by the Liberal party. It is unknown at this time if he will still continue with his bid, but he is expected to release a statement later today (Oct. 7).

Korab has hired a company to do phone polls in the region to see if the support is there for him to run.

Coombs admitted he was a strong Tory supporter in the past, but his personal opinions and views on the provincial government have changed in the past two years.

“There has been a lot of support coming to me from all over the region,” he explained. “I really think I have made the right decision.”

“I believe it is important for someone who lives in this region to represent the people of this region.”

Meanwhile, Jack Harrington – former executive assistant to Jerome Kennedy – has confirmed he will seek the PC nod.

Many names have been rumoured to be running, but as of today there have been no official announcements, besides Coombs and Harrington.

Not only does Jamie Korab show lack of discipline and "cry babyish" attitude on the Brad Gushue rink, which is why he got demoted to an "alternate" in the first place, he has lack of political discipline as well. Since Korab is an athlete and a quitter, he sets a terrible example for how athletes should act. Besides, athletes are supposed to be fighters and never give up, not quitters like Jamie Korab.

The Liberals only received 19.1% of the vote in the last provincial election. So, without the support of former Tory supporters they cannot win the next provincial election, all of these comments about opportunitsts are groundless. Where was so called Liberals like Antle during the last election? Timing is everything in politics. The last election nobody worthy ran for the Liberals and nobody worthy got elected for the Liberals.

Just what the liberals need, another sooky baby. Coombs cries everytime somethng does not go his way. He had little support in Harbour Grace and less in Carbonear and Victoria. Merely being his normal self - mess with Don Coombs and I will get back at you. I wonder whos money he will waste in the campaign?

Yeah, another Political Opportunist leaving the party he loved and funded to run for a sure win (anyone remember Kent?). The forces should come out and make sure Coombs goes nowhere. If one can change their political views that quickly who knows what else will make them change their mins or views.

Mr. Coombs stands for nothing. Like the old political saying goes "You an fool some of the people some of the time, and most of the people most of the time." If people in this district vote for Mr. Coombs, they'll get exactly what they deserve. Oh wait. People in that area voted for Scott Andrews in the last two elections. Again, they get exactly what they deserved. Hopefully they vote for both Mr Coombs and Mr Andrews next election. And get exactly what they deserve.

OMG! The Tories have another person running with the liberals, besides Cathy! I figure they are dire straits now and will do anything to protect their Muskrat Business Plan. Like getting Pc members to try and influence these polls.

The liberals should be calling the man from the west coast, to be running in this byelection, some one with a vision. for the people.

All the ex P.C.s are running to get on the Liberal band wagon. They don't care about the party, only winning a seat in government. That's pretty low in my opinion.

Don Coombs is a Liberal?? There's not a drop of red blood in that man's body. He was supposed to run for the PC party 6 or 7 years ago and then Jerome showed up in the picture and fooled up his plans. Maybe that's why they didn't get along. He knows he doesn't stand a chance against Jack and now, all of a sudden, he's a Liberal. Nothing but a political opportunist if you ask me. The best place for Don Coombs is with the Bloc Quebecois. Good luck to Jamie Korab...he will have my support.

Well, Jack Harrington should have problem to win the district, when the time comes, Coombs is done , just like the council. His time has gone, give some else the banner to run, the people of Hr. Grace will not vote for him, he has crossed to many paths in the years has mayor. Maybe Sam Slade can run and that would put and end to Mr. Coombs

Harbor Grace will always be Carbonear's Mount Pearl. Just like Stephenville and Stephenville crossing. They are the same place.

Don has not been nicknamed "promise Don" for nothing. He is a great speaker but lacks any trustworthiness. He was recently ousted from council because of a lack of support, he was suspended 1 year from NL School Sports because of the way he handled a school team during a Prov tour. He misled the people of Harbour Grace on the stadium and purposefully ignored the stadium talks in order to slow the process down. And he never had a good relationship with a lot of people, including Kennedy, as he was not trusted and was openingly against anything else somene would propose. He never ever supported liberals and would not now only he is being self-serving again. Just as he had for the past few years.

Coombs you been trusted with too much over the years already. You can't name two productive things you have done, unless it was all the Towns money you spent on the soccer field. Just like the past few years, you are going on your own wim and will no doubt embarras yourself once again. LOL

Congrats Don on thebig decision. If history repeats itself you have certainly blundered over the years in making decisions. You decided not to let your councils speak over the years , you have decided to refuse citizens an opportunity to speak at council meetings, you have decided to let a crowd of school age children act like idiots and get yourself a one year suspension from NL School Sports. You decided that Cee Bee Minor Hockey is not the primary tenant of the stadium. You have decided to ignor other important repsonsibilties in your life and now decided run for our liberals. Like the decisions you have made over the years, this decision will bite back at you severely. You have done nothing constructive over the past few years, ticked off all those that put faith in you, are totally one-minded and now want us to trust you again. Perhaps a year a way (just like the one year school sports suspension from coaching) will do you good, Slide a way and see you in 12 months.
