RW your commentary is timely, fair and long overdue. I believe that regional fire departments and mandatory training, up to date equipment and in most of the province professional or professionally qualified firemen/women are necessary. In our more remote smaller communities where regionalisation is impossible, perhaps there should be p[tovincial emergency services provided which would be similar to our forest fire protection system, crews and equipment would respond from centralised depot and totally funded by the province. Pie in the sky? maybe but something has to be done.

There are many contributing factors to governmental ineptitude. The biggest is governmental immunities from lawsuit or other responsibility for any activity no matter how negligent or malevolent the activity. Subject them to the same scrutiny and liability that is applicable to private enterprises and there may be some hope for meaningful improvement.

It all gets back to the feudal politics we have been blessed with over our entire history but now it is entrenched with the secrecy of Bill 29. Government largesse is alive and well....and we continue to elect people who are practitioners of art of dipping freely into the political pork barrel. On this issue, I lump all of our current political parties in the same category. Is this why so many people have become disengaged and a government can gain a huge majority while commanding only 35% of the total eligible vote. The need for electoral reform has never been greater. Nor has the need for transparency and openness.
