Love your children, don’t condemn them to perpetual war

A column I wrote a few years ago about the Middle East brought this terse response from an anonymous gentle reader: “Jones, you must be a rat Jew.”

Well, no, but I didn’t reply to my friendly correspondent, because doing so would merely reinforce his/her prejudice that it matters whether a person is Hebrew.

Social media is a saviour for bigots. The anti-Semitic attitudes flying around on Facebook the past few weeks are unsettling at best and disgusting at worst.

Of course, it’s risky to defend Israel these days. If you do, you’re branded either a rat Jew or a supporter of heartless child killers. Possibly both.

Instead of reciting yet again the well-known and oft-cited reasons why Israel has a right to exist and to defend the life and liberty of its rat-Jew citizens, let’s focus on Hamas and its supporters.

Don’t try that in Gaza

Someone organized a Solidarity With Gaza event in St. John’s this week.

Pride Week in St. John’s ran from July 14-21. The coincidental timing is worth contemplating, especially by anyone who attended both events.

Chances are extremely slim that a Pride Parade will be held in Gaza City this year, or next year, or any year while Hamas holds power.

Palestinians are indeed an oppressed, subjugated people. But their oppression is mostly due to their own leaders who, over the course of several generations, have been consistently vicious and violent.

Attendees of the Solidarity With Gaza rally will undoubtedly object to that statement. Such a thing would only be said by a racist, an imperialist, an Israeli apologist, a rat Jew, etc., etc.

And yet … Hamas seized full power in the Gaza Strip in 2007 by using its superior firepower — thanks Iran! — to force Fatah out.

No respect for democracy. No civil rights. Perpetual war on Israel. This is the legacy Palestinian leaders have foisted upon their people.

Citizens of Gaza freely elected Hamas in 2006, so in one sense they bear some responsibility for Hamas’s violent reign.

Long-term forecast: war

It isn’t enough to just lament innocent people being killed. If there is war, innocent people will die. The shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine is another recent tragic example.

To stop the killing of innocents, you have to stop the war — and to do that, you must understand its cause.

The cause of the perpetual war in the Middle East is that Arab and Palestinian leaders will not recognize Israel’s right to exist.

They have two choices: accept Israel’s existence and live in peace, or reject Israel’s existence and engage in constant warfare. They have chosen the latter.

The citizens of Gaza, as with all Palestinians, could have had their own country several times.

They could have had an independent Palestine during the British Mandate of 1923-48, when Britain controlled the Holy Land and some other Middle East real estate due to the Ottoman Empire’s fighting for the losing side in the First World War.

They could have had an independent Palestine in 1947-48, when the United Nations intended to create countries for the Jews and for the Palestinians. Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948. The Palestinians, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq immediately went to war against Israel.

They could have had an independent Palestine from the Oslo Accord of 1993-2001. Instead, Palestinians chose their intifada of 2002.

A succinct summation of the war in the Middle East was made by former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir: “We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.”

I see. So it's all the Palestinians' fault. So its necessary to bomb their homes, marketplaces, hospitals and UN facilities which shelter refugees (from the 45% of Gaza the Israeli army has now declared a free fire zone): http://www.theguardia n.com/world/video/2014/jul/31/un-spokesman-chris-gunness-breaks-down-during-aljazeera-interview-video. Brian - its a war crime. Say so.

Brian Jones!!BRAVO!! The real bigots on this thread are the fools who believe that Palastinians are just regular people who want a homeland! But regular people don't teach their kids from day one in schools that it's Patriotic to Kill Jews and they're going to be rewarded in the great beyond with 72 Virgins after they pay the supreme sacrifice!!Or to strap bombs to kids and have them detonate those bombs in crowded streets full of all kinds of people, including Palistinians! It's not regular to put Rocket Launchers in schools, Churches and Hospitals and use your own citizens as human shields so you can send rockets by the thousands raining down on the heads of innocent Jews and Arabs who live in Israel! But a lot of the the Palistanian suck up goofy Newfies on this thread, who have never been off the Rock in their lives, are hollaring like Banshees about the terrible Jews and how their killing innocent children! It's the Palistinians that are killing their own children by doing the things that I have mentioned above! What I find strange about this article is that I'm kind of stunned that the Telegram even printed it! They got something right for once! LONG LIVE ISRAEL!!!

I wonder if the editors would let a comment like this pass if it were directed at Jews.

Palestinians, you are correct, are NOT a regular people. Regular people are not subject to living in an open air prison camp, where they are subject to a blockade that prevents basic life necessities from entering. Where they are, according to the Israelis, being "put on a diet". Regular people aren't residents of an illegally occupied territory, where if they fight back (well within their rights) are subject to brutal and precise ethnic cleansing via American military weaponry by one of the most powerful armies in the world. Regular people don't have to be instructed by the occupying power (Israel) to seek shelter in location X, only for location X to then be bombed by the occupying power. (This has happened during Operation Protective Edge). Regular people don't have to worry about their kids playing soccer on a beach being shot by Israeli naval artillery and blown to bits. Regular people don't have to worry about United Nations safe zones being attacked by tanks, airstrikes, and other attacks by Israel. Palestinian children aren't taught that it's patriotic to kill jews, they are being taught that it is patriotic to kill the enemy. It just so happens that the enemy is a self proclaimed ETHNIC Jewish state. Can you imagine a WHITE state? The KKK sure can. American children are taught that it was patriotic to kill the Japanese enemies, the Kraut enemies, the Iraq and Afghani enemies. What's the difference? The difference is that Palestine is subjected to a brutal, inhumane, and illegal occupation. They are subject to damned near apartheid laws. Want to know what's not regular? The occupation of Palestine by Israel. The DISPROPORTIONATE AND ILLEGAL retaliation by Israel. Under international law, an occupied people have a right to VIOLENTLY resist. Under international law, an OCCUPYING POWER has the right to self defense EXCLUDING VIOLENCE. Israel created Hamas. Israel is a lunatic state. End the occupation. Abolish the far right government in Israel.

Disgusting. I never thought I would see the day when someone in a newspaper would try to defend the murder of children. Collective punishment is a war crime. The deliberate targeting of schools and hospitals is a war crime. Why don't you understand that?

It's simple really. It all starts by dehumanising a marginalised people, imposing a common set of negative characters, blaming them for their own oppression, and presenting them as a threat. Oh, and God help them if they ever fight back! It worked in the Warsaw Ghetto and it's working (for bigoted and some small minds) in Gaza.

Cecil, you either didn't read the article, and or don't understand the history of the region. Countries surrounding Israel have been trying to wipe it out since 1948, they have been trying to invade it, terrorizing it, killing the people there, bombing it and they do have an agenda to wipe it off the map, and do not recognize it's right to exist. Quite simply, if Hamas, a terrorist organization, stops raining down missles on Israel, then Israel will stop what it is doing. It would do you some good to look at the overall history since 1948 to get the true picture.

Do you really know anything about history or just acting like one who knows ! When you said , all of the people in area want to kill Jewish , what do you mean ? First of wall the were NO jewish in the area before in past couple 100 years , unless you talk about 2000 mythical time of Judaism & Islam & all the other mythical bullshit , Palestinian let them IN & they start living peacefully together! Also the only area in the middles east that has Jewish is IRAN +35000 now living in Iran ! So NEVER say every body want to kill jewish , it's all your Israeli propaganda ! But lots of countries are against Zionist !as you know lots of jewish are against them too ! Anyway , if Israel would let Palestine live in peace & freely in Gaza & West Bank there would be no current problem. But ZIONIST want West Bank as well , and want to all the Palestinian live in Gaza like PRISON ! With no access to anywhere . Get your fact right then talk , unless if you are Israeli. & the U already brainwashed !

Get your heaed out of the National Post. Nothing justifies the ongoing murderous rampage of the Israeli "security" forces on Gaza, or the rest of Palestine. This land was taken from the people who were sent into Bantustans, humiliated, starved, cut off from the rest of the worlds while Israel continues to build illegal settlements and denying Palestinians the right to the necessities of life. Londoners resisted the Blitz, and the people of Gaza will continue to resist a campaign that had been condemned by the rest of the world, save for the US and its lapdog, Stephen Harper. This ongoing oppression does nothing to secure Israel and everything to strengthen the resolve and support of Hamas. Palestinians have a right to defend themselves too, Brian, even if you don’t like it.

I have a feeling if you were to speak so freely under HAMAS, a terrorist Jihadi organization, you wouldn't get a second opportunity to do so. Perhaps you should rethink who you are supporting. By the way, the Israelites have been in that land for thousands of years, read some history. By the way, there never was a Palestinian state, Gazans are essentially Egyptians and the population of the west bank are essentially Jordanians. By the way, truckloads of essentials of life enter Gaza daily, from Israel. The only ones denying then life necessities are their own government, HAMAS. I wonder where all the money comes from to get rockets and miles of sophisticated terror tunnel networks.. they must get it for free.

Firstly, I am no fan of Hamas, however the Israeli actions only strengthen this organization. Secondly, Israel was imposed on the people who originally lived there and were forcibly displaced so that the West would have a foothold in a strategic part of the world. They are no more Egyptian or Jordanian than I am Dutch. Israel continues to cut Palestinians off from their fertile lands and blockades them from the ocean. When flotillas tried to send in medicines and other humanitarian aid, the Israeli Navy prevented them by force. Using the excuse of a bunch of useless missiles popping out of a ghetto to justify a powerful state to relentlessly bomb hospitals, schools, nurseries, refugee camps, is real terrorism. If you want to undermine Hamas, start negotiating... in good faith, not while you're building illegal settlements. And it probably doesn’t help that Israel’s staunchest ally (and arms supplier) is mediating negotiations.
