Not having watched "Saturday Night Live" since the 1970s, I don't know whether it's true, as someone once told me, that when Pamela Anderson hosted the show, she stripped down to her bare essentials, to the mixed delight and disgust of the audience.
Say what you want about the world's most famous sexpot anti-sealer, she sure knows how to get in the news.
Anderson made the newswires hum again last week.
She has filed Access to Information requests to find out how much money the federal government spends to support the seal hunt.
Opponents of Anderson's ongoing anti-sealing campaign might chortle and recite that reliable cliché about naked people living in glass houses not throwing stones - after all, she's in the acting and TV business, of sorts, an industry that over the years has received millions of public dollars.
Anderson and her favourite group, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), are master newsmakers. They know how to make headlines and news clips.
Exploitation
And PETA's favourite tool is naked young women.
You've probably seen the images of PETA protests: nude young women wrapped in cellophane; a trio of half-naked Russian beauties baring their "blood"-drenched chests on a Moscow street; a half-naked woman lying on a Canadian flag, "blood" dripping from her body and from the Maple Leaf; scantily clad women crouching in a cage; topless women holding signs that read, "I'd rather go naked than wear fur."
OK then. Go naked.
It's a free world, mostly.
The people at PETA - not to be confused with PeTA, the People for T and A - sure know how to create an eye-catching image. That's why so many media - print and electronic - cover their events. Cynics might say the media is being manipulated. Others might say the media is getting free, easy content that is guaranteed to catch the interest of readers/viewers.
After all, who can ignore images of beautiful, barely clad young women? They sell cars. They sell beer. They sell anti-sealing slogans.
Whistle stop
Some months ago, two pretty PETA protesters were doing their thing in Calgary.
The pictures that circulated on the newswire added a new dimension to their efforts. Two construction workers, not surprisingly, took an interest in their activities. Apparently not satisfied with being mere stereotypes by whistling and hooting, "Hey, baby," the construction workers decided to get in on the photo-op.
While one worker took a picture, the other - still wearing his hard hat - draped a huge arm around the shoulder of one of the attractive young PETA protesters, who had on white panties and stockings and nothing else.
Looking at a photo like that, you have to wonder whether all the feminists really have broken through the glass ceiling in the boardroom, and no longer notice anything that goes on down on the street. Maybe the women's studies students and professors never leave campus, or follow the news. Their silence is puzzling.
A generation ago, there probably would have been shrill howls of outrage at such chauvinistic campaigns.
Perhaps in this era of postfeminism and neo-feminism, women really have attained equality with men, so using sex to sell is no longer an issue.
Or, more likely, the sexist PETA events aren't the target of criticism because they are promoting a greater good.
So what if they exploit young women, if they can use their bodies - willingly, obviously - to save seals, bunnies, chickens, cows, etc.
PETA is great with images, but less skilled with facts. Here's a fact for them: PETA members might tout vegetarianism, but they treat women like meat.

Oh like seal hunters give a crap about woman's rights.
How about the incident a few months ago where a lone young woman protesting the seal hunt in St John's was thrown to the ground had her costume ripped off and a pie thrown in her face by a big fat neanderthal looking man?
Woman should be able to do whatever they like with their bodies!
I seen a female being pelted and the pup came out of her when they cut her open, the pup was dead. This seal was killed for a while. This was on the day we got one hundred and seventy. Someone passed the comment, 'If Green peace were only here to see this.'

Actually they are being skinned alive, you can read it here the report link is at the end. It's funny that the sealers complain about us lying when we have facts about all the statements we make concerning the cruel slaughter. Their reasons to support the hunt change from year to year and are full of misinformation and government propaganda, such as they are eating all the cod which the dfo falsely claimed year after year and have now retracted although we still hear it from the sealers with absolutely no scientific facts supporting it.
In 2001, a report by an independent team of veterinarians who studied the hunt concluded that governmental regulations regarding humane killing were neither being respected nor enforced, and that the seal hunt failed to comply with Canada's basic animal welfare standards. Shockingly, the veterinarians found that in 42 percent of the cases they studied, the seals had likely been skinned alive while conscious.
Parliamentarians, journalists, and scientists who observe Canada's commercial seal hunt each year continue to report unacceptable levels of cruelty, including sealers dragging conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, shooting seals and leaving them to suffer in agony, stockpiling dead and dying animals, and even skinning seals alive.

I see in this post you have dropped the word baby , another name for whitecoat, because no one has been allowed to hunt them for at least the past 25 yrs. That's a start Gerry!! 98% of seals killed are under 3 months of age, and these seals can live to be over 35 years old. Most have not yet had their first solid meal or taken their first swimand they literally have no escape from the hunters.
These are DFO stats, sorry 12 to 90 day old seals who havent had a solid meal and can not yet swim are babies! -

The only reason SOME groups still show white coats is because it is illegal to film the slaughter unless you get a permit. The government doesn't want people to know what is going on out there because they know how barbaric it is - Sea Shepherd only has photos of the white coats because they were banished from getting too close! Second of all...most of groups are using grey seals in their photos now - yes grey baby seals- and some you cant tell the colour because its just their bloody carcas that had been left on the ice to rot - with the fur on the boat on its way to a warehouse to be stored with the pelts from last year and year before because no one wants to buy them. THIRDLY the colour of the fur does not make a difference to how much pain and suffering is endured by these innocent animals. I'm pretty sure a 12 day old seal and a 14 day old seal feel the most terrible pain when they have a hook stabbed through their jaw and are dragged across the ice while still conscious.

Between 1999 and 2004, the overall rate of spousal violence against women in Canada declined (a 1% decrease). Newfoundland and Labrador was the only jurisdiction during this five year period to show an increase in spousal violence against women (a 2% increase). -

Gee Polly why don't you say it again, I didn't hear ya the first 3. Women are their own worst enemies when it comes to protecting their rights. Clubs and bars only offer up money for the women to do degrading acts, the women are the guilty ones who offer their bodies up for exploitation for money, in turn giving themselves and women a bad name. If women kept their clothes on, there would be no gentlemen's clubs, or wettshirt contests, or dirty magazines. It is the women who are a fault, we just watch the show.

Here is another fact Mr. Jones , PETA is only one on a long list of groups that exploit women . Pubs and bars with their wet tee shirt contests , gentleman's clubs--- that is a misnomer--- , the many , many magazines like Hustler . Young women of today live by a set of standards of their own making . You , Mr. Jones with your outmoded sense of morality , may be projecting your bias .

Are their coats white??? No, of course not, but why do every animal rights group post pictures of fluffy WHITE coated seals?? To suck people like you, into donating to their cause .
