Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) recently held its eastern regional meeting in Clarenville, where 20 representatives showed their support for establishing a new program on workplace safety with municipalities.

Also on the agenda: the municipal task force on waste management. Members reiterated their frustration with the implementation process and apparent lack of direction of provincial government.

MNL was established in 1951 with a mandate to represent municipal government interests. They represent 281 cities and towns across the province.

Irish do

Irish stew, home-made buns and Irish Ceili dancing all come together at New West Valley’s Fall Fair being held Saturday at the Beothic Arena. The town is celebrating its cultural diversity with an Irish theme. The fair goes on all day and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. There will be dancing afterwards with the local band 97 FIVE.

Deadline

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council is accepting applications for its’ ommunity arts program supporting projects by community-based, non-profit arts organizations and groups. Application deadline is Sept. 30. (Projects must start on or after Dec. 1.)

Box office open

The Arts and Culture Centre box office in St. John’s is open after their summer hiatus. For full season listings, check their website at www.artsandculturecentre.com, or their new  Facebook page. 

Reminder for all you Carlton Showband fans — the tickets are going fast! It’s their first time on the road in 14 years.

Mark your calendar

September’s a busy month. Among the most popular events: the annual fall plant sale at the MUN botanical Garden, starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11, and the annual Rennie’s River Duck Race scheduled for Sept. 25.

You can sponsor one of the 4,000 yellow rubber ducks “racing” their way down the river to the finish line on King’s Bridge Road. Just buy a sponsoring ticket. First prize this year is a trip to New York City, including  flights, accommodations and spending money.

Dining for dance

Supporters of Kittiwake Dance Theatre are holding a luncheon on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Murray’s Pond in Portugal Cove at 12:30 p.m. For tickets: support@kittiwakedancetheatre.ca.

Plan ahead

“China Moon” is the sixth annual Friends of the Craft Council fundraising dinner. The date is Oct. 6 . It will feature a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 and entertainment. It’s at the Johnson GEO Centre, with catering by A Taste of Class. There will also be a silent auction. For tickets: 753-2749 or e-mail  info@craftcouncil.nl.ca.

Alien plants

“Balancing Act: Invasive Alien Plants” is the latest exhibition by St. John’s/Tors Cove painter Margaret Walsh Best. It features watercolours of plant species found across the province that have “come from away.”

The exhibition will tour two locations in Ireland this fall. It will be shown at The Old Market Gallery in Dungarven, County Waterford, from Aug. 15-Oct. 4, and at the Coastguard Station Cultural Centre in Tramore from Oct. 10-Nov. 14.

Walsh received a grant for $4,200 through the Newfoundland and Labrador professional project grants program. For more information: www.nlac.nf.ca.
