Yup, that pretty much sums it up. It really is a shame the service industry in NL is not more professional, or at least cognizant, in terms of the very visible role they play in representing the entire tourism industry. It is an opportunity to charm the socks off of visitors and locals alike, lest I point out the obvious- a business opportunity to snag a repeat customer, hence, grow and solidfy the health, vitality and future of your small business. Alas, it is an opportunity often sorely wasted. Good help is hard to find I guess. Well done Pam. PS Re: the drowned kitten, I guess Gene from NC was unfortunately not totally incorrect in pointing out the seeming NL penchant for mistreating animals- PETA advertisments not withstanding. Sad and shameful.

We've sold tourists on the idea that this is nothing short of the Garden of Eden. All tourism ads are "beautiful fictions" to some extent, but Newfoundland's have the added element of having nothing underpinning them whatsoever....there is no infrastructure, little professionalism, and non-existent hospitality standards. The message is "just come here and it will be wonderful". The government says that tourism is a sustainable panacea for rural Newfoundland. But the reality is that we are drawing hard from a pot of contrived goodwill that is quietly, quickly being depleted and exposed. The Newfoundland cod fishery was a sustainable renewable resource that we destroyed out of hubris, ignorance and greed.....Newfoundland tourism is no different.

I have to agree with the notion that the ads on tv "gloss" the island significantly and fail to show the "ugly" side of Newfoundland. After residing in Alberta for 15 years and originally from here, i was subdued by the ads that aired on tv and i decided to move home for good.I packed up my stuff and drove across Canada !The first rental here i encountered Very noisey neighbours and a infestation of earwigs within the residence.A one off i thought! The second rental here didnt have earwigs inside but the neighbors in Petty Harbour are redneck simple people, out to rip you off,and to be quite honest, ive never encountered people like that in my 40 years on this planet.I have lived basically in every province in Canada and never seen anything like that in my life. Now im not knocking Newfoundlanders, but it has changed significantly since i was here 20 years ago.Im thinking about leaving again now and only been back 2 years.Shame what has happened to this place!
