Money better spent elsewhere

Bravo to Dr. Penny Allderdice! In a recent letter to the editor in The Telegram, Dr. Allderdice indicated she had declined an invitation to participate in the recent Ovations event as she felt the cost of the event ($250,000-plus) could better be spent elsewhere.

If you missed it, the event was titled Ovations: Applauding Accomplishments of Women in Our Communities, hosted by Premier Kathy Dunderdale and with a keynote address by Premier Kathy Dunderdale.

I agree completely with Dr. Allderdice.

What a misguided waste of money this initiative was. How foolish. How irresponsible.

With government funding being withdrawn from so many social agencies and the provincial government screaming about cutbacks and layoffs during the annual pre-budget road show, how totally inappropriate the dedication of any resources to such an endeavour must seem to many.

While the accomplishments by women in our province are very considerable and laudatory, that does not, in my opinion, justify the expenditure of such a level of funding, whether private or public, not with people lining up at food banks and groups like the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities being declined what amounted to a small pittance to cover rent and operating expenses, etc.

Indeed, the $250,000 plus could be better spent elsewhere. Indeed!

The Ovations conference wasn't about celebrating women. It was a $250,000.00 paid political advertisement for Dunderdale. The petty decisions which this government is making will come back to haunt them.

Yes of course it is waste but it pales in comparison to the lift feature added to the new Placentia bridge. The arrogance is appalling.
