Shame on us

Seventeen-year-old figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond, from Marystown, achieved a major milestone this past weekend. She finished eighth in the world in the Women’s Singles event. Eighth in the world! And she is from Newfoundland and Labrador!

I was saddened to see the headline in the March 18 edition of The Telegram: “Marystown skater stumbles to eighth.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, the article on this marvellous achievement was relegated to page D3, some 27 pages deep, in the regular sports section.

Surely you can do better than that?

Maybe a front-page article would have been more appropriate, in lieu of that riveting piece on potatoes?

It mystifies me why the achievements of our best and brightest, like Ms. Osmond, would be demeaned in this manner.

For shame!

A Newfoundland lobster crawling out of the pot, Marvin...we'll have none of it.

With respect. While Kaetlyn accomplished much on the WORLD stage, many of us don't give a good continental about skating.

Bottom line is results. How many stories have been written of Ice Caps bad results this year.Maybe the young lady will bounce back. Then she will get deserved media coverage.

CONGRATULATIONS While I did not catch the actual skating event on TV, I did hear of Kaetlyn's success on the radio, and did read the Telegram's coverage of her magnificent success. Kaetlyn performed excellently by all accounts. CONGRATULATIONS KAETLYN. That said Marvin, I do think that you most unjustly, most unfairly villified the Telegram for under-reporting Kaetlyn's magnificant achivement. You forgot to mention to the readers of your silly 'belly-ache' (by the way, which very likely has embarrassed Katelyn, herself; and her family) that the Telegram, on it's 'FRONT PAGE', THE VERY TOP, IN FULL COLOR...KAETLYN FLYING THROUGH THE AIR IN ONE OF HER JUMPS. Media coverage does not get any better than that. Wait, wait...page D3...Kaetlyn gets a full third of a page...flying across the page (an aside...Patrick Chan got a snap-shot. Though does't protest too much Marvin. In fact, you, very likely, have embarrassed both Kaetlyn and her family by unecessarily causing a very unconscionable dust-up in the midst of one of Katelyn's greatest achievements in her young career. Do the gentlemanly thing Marvin, apologize to Katelyn and her family, for raining on her parade.

Well said Mr. Barnes. The only people who don't stumble in their lives and point fingers at those who do are, for the most part, people who either lack the intestinal fortitude to take a risk of any description, or are perhaps more interested in focusing their on her physical attributes than her athlectic ability. Ms. Osmond has, at the age of 17 achieved much, and obviously has the talent, the guts, and the desire to achieve much more. Well done Kaetlyn.
