    I have read or heard several different versions of this story including one on CBC radio which clearly stated that captured farm fish had to be turned into DFO for examination. So Mr. Myers could be forgiven for having the same impression. The bottom line is that you're department did a terrible job communicating this information to the public. But DFO is ignoring the larger issue here, which of course is the risk of genetic degradation in wild salmon resulting from these frequent escapes. .... I know DFO, the CFIA , the aquaculture industry and its booster club (e.g. Mr. Taylor) like to assure the masses that everything is hunky dory in the synthetic fish line, but a lot of us aren't buying it - literally. Like many other Newfoundlanders, I've been off farm salmon for some time now - ever since the CFIA approved the sale of diseased salmon in Canada (the Americans won't let it in the country, so it has been stocked up here in great quantities and sold through stores like costco). Initially the price dropped a couple of dollars a kilo but is now climbing back up as people begin to forget that it is diseased. .... The next big threat coming to a protected cove near you is the Frankenfish - the artificial salmon that grows at twice the speed. Genetically engineered with MUN's help, the FDA is getting ready to foist this manufactured product on an unsuspecting world. Anybody's guess what will happen when escaped Frankenfish inevitably cross-breed with our wild salmon. I hope some responsible group has done enough tests on our original wild salmon stock to know when it begins to morph. Who knows - it might already have happened.
