GoBus - please don't go on strike

My name is Abby Quigley and I am the Easter Seals ambassador for 2013. I am 14 years old and I have spina bifida. I use a wheelchair and crutches for mobility.

GoBus helps me go to the places I love if my parents aren't able to drive me. It gives me more freedom and independence. I use GoBus to go to camps at Easter Seals and other Easter Seals activities. My friends also rely on GoBus to go to activities and to go places like the mall. I like GoBus because I'm able to make good friends with the bus drivers. They are really nice and helpful.

If there is a strike, I would have to miss some activities because I wouldn't have transportation. This would mean that I would miss being with my friends and going places I want to go. GoBus gives me a lot of the freedom that other kids my age have. But unlike them, I can't just get on any bus. I need special transportation. The longer a strike lasts, the more kids like me will miss out on.

I hope that the company that owns GoBus and CUPE take kids like me and my friends into consideration when they make decisions about this strike.

Good job Abby! You represent many people who feel the same way. Nice to hear from youth who care.

How about trying to negotiate with a multinational whose first offer to the bus drivers was a 25 cent increase? Support the bus drivers, increase the demand for services, and sort out all the issues around regional transportation this province has. DO NOT BLAME THE BUS DRIVERS who are overworked, receive no extrra pay for overtime, escort frail people in places they shouldn't (like up ramps that are illegal), they have been asked to shovel sidewalks, escort people door to door, listen to people who want to die because they are so ill, get yelled at when they are 'late;' people don't know the company is fined when they are EARLY; that is a company policy, not the union's. This company is so bad they can't even find enough drivers who want the crappy job. The drivers are berated for everything from the service to the weather. Never mind the insurance issue if a bus drivers slips and falls on YOUR property. The company won't cover the drivers if that occurs. Now, who needs a union? Everyone.
