I write concerning the letter to the editor, “Safety is everyone’s responsibility,” in the Aug. 17 Weekend Telegram.
Gilbert Bennett, vice-president of the Lower Churchill project for Nalcor Energy, and Dave Riffe, manager of safety, health, security and emergency response for Nalcor Energy at the Muskrat Falls construction site, were the authors of the letter.
They wrote, “In our view, (Michael) Johansen’s article encouraged members of the general public to breach the Muskrat Falls construction site with the intent of disrupting site activity. This has serious safety consequences and is a violation of the law.”
If there is, as claimed, a violation of the law, what are Nalcor Energy senior employees Bennett and Riffe doing writing a letter to the editor and not filing a complaint with the nearest RCMP detachment against Michael Johansen of the town of Northwest River, Newfoundland and Labrador?
Our society operates on the basis of “the rule of law,” that is, all persons are equal before the law. No matter who you are or who your daddy is, or what position you hold or to what group in society you belong, if you break the law you must answer to the law. Upholding the law is everyone’s responsibility.
