Voters in Harbour Grace-Carbonear showed real gumption and guts in electing Liberal Sam Slade as their representative in the House of Assembly.
Jerome Kennedy, who was known to be restless and impatient, made an impulsive decision to walk away before his term was up, leaving his loyal constituents high and dry.
His impulsiveness without due regard for his district is intolerant and a failing in any modern democracy.
There should be a law that says, unless a life or death situation arises, MHAs are legally bound to complete their term as an elected representative in any district.
Complacency such as that shown by Kennedy should be addressed.
During the campaign, PC members of the House were telling voters in the district to send in a man who will become a member on the government side of the House.
I think anyone with a grain of salt saw through that nonsense.
Sam Slade is now the MHA, a Liberal member who gave the sitting government its comeuppance.
For that, I say congratulations.
Your courageous decision is a lesson for the entire electoral system of our province.
Harbour Grace-Carbonear will be well serviced by a very well respected citizen from the district — a man with an impeccable record of service.
