As a family physician, I have long been an advocate of digital health records and have used electronic files in my family practice for seven years. More recently, I began using the latest component of our provincial electronic health record, the HEALTHe NL Viewer, as well.
Having provided medical guidance in the development of the viewer, I was pleased to hear the recent announcement that the viewer is now being made available across our health-care system.
The viewer is an online portal that gives authorized health professionals one point of access to view important patient health information available in our provincial electronic health record. I can now view those medication profiles available in the Pharmacy Network and I am looking forward to the future addition of lab results, X-rays and other diagnostic reports, all of which will provide an even more comprehensive profile for my patients.
Having this reliable and convenient source to check patient information allows me to spend more time with patients and less time calling around for, or waiting on, information.
More information, better decisions
Having more inclusive information available when I see patients supports more informed care decisions and results in better efficiency, improved quality and safer care.
No doubt, over time, it will also reduce the need to repeat tests, saving time and money.
I have witnessed many changes in the delivery of health care during my 32 years as a physician.
I am now experiencing firsthand the positive impact the HEALTHe NL Viewer has on patient care and on my practice.
I firmly believe that the availability of timely access to reliable patient information when and where it is needed — at the point of care — will improve health care for the people of our province.
