What do you say, Bill Barry?

Now that Bill Barry has announced his intention to run for the top political post in our province, I have two questions I would like to put to him publicly, and also would like to make the public in general aware of  the lack of freedom in the fishery that is normally taken for granted in democracies all over the world.

The same two questions will be applicable to others who vie for the premiership of this province.

So I will simply say, Mr. Barry:

• For years, fishermen have been asking for a free market in the buying and selling of their products. If elected premier, will you allow free enterprise in the buying of fish products, such that buyers from other provinces will have free and unfettered access to harvester’s products, thus ensuring a truly democratic competitive marketplace?

• In almost all economic endeavours, would-be entrepreneurs are free to establish a business using their personal capital. If elected premier, would you tear down the wall of protectionism that gives present fish merchants a monopoly, and allow whomever from wherever, using their own capital, to establish community processing facilities such that small boat fishers could sell their hundred pounds of herring, squid or mackerel?

To quote President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 exhortation to Soviet

leader Mikhail Gorbachev, “Mr. Barry, will you tear down this wall and restore democracy to the Newfoundland and Labrador fishing industry?”

If the answer to those questions should be in the affirmative, then Mr. Barry has my support and, furthermore, I shall be tempted to say, “Yes, Virginia, there is a God!”

Sure, "There's a catch", and why not eliminate the special EI treatment of farmers and all seasonal workers employed in providing us with food? We can always buy rice and insects from China in a pinch.

That's an interesting thought. Would fishermen be willing to be subjected to the same EI eligibility requirements as farmers in return to having the same market freedoms as farmers.

Sure David, and in the spirit of "free market" and "democracy", you must support the elimination of special treatment to fishermen for EI.
