Wake-up call

On Jan. 30, there were two big announcements on the news media. In one, new Premier Tom Marshall announced that he was going to hire a committee to study Bill 29 because people were upset about it. In his words, we want experts to do a report, but we are not sure if we will accept it. It’s a funny thing; when they passed this legislation they were all experts.

The other announcement was about the fishery by the provincial fisheries minister and the fisheries union.  In 2014, we are going to pursue the idea of shipping fresh cod into the United States market, because frozen cod blocks are at the low end of the scale and fresh fish fetches a higher price.

I am very confused; other Maritime provinces have always shipped fresh fish into the U.S. market, gotten a better price for it, and fishermen in these provinces have always got a much better price than our fishermen in Newfoundland and Labrador.

What is happening to our politicians and the union? Are they on some kind of energy drink or are they just waking up, because in my opinion, they have been asleep at the wheel for a very long time.
