Municipal mouthpiece

I gather from local news reports the City of St. John’s, our municipal government, is in the process of strengthening its communications and public engagement capacity.

Well, I would like to see our highest paid, and one of two full-time municipal politicians, i.e. Dennis O’Keefe, as our mayor, be the designated spokesman for all city-wide issues and problems.

I’m tired of deputy city manager, Paul Mackey, and junior, first-term, councillors addressing the contentious issues of snowclearing (or lack of), potholes, sub-standard housing, parking, etc., while the mayor is often silent, or takes a back seat, on the problems in our city.

When issues arise, I think all media should ask for the mayor to address these issues with the public and if he refuses or delegates to someone else, to let us know in any news reports on the city's problems. Further, I wonder if the mayor “took the heat” for all city issues if we might see better resolution of problems in a more timely fashion.

I expect more of the mayor.
