Thinking about the deficit

While celebrating the goodies delivered in the 2014 budget by Premier Tom Marshall and Finance Minister Charlene Johnson, spare a moment for reflection on the deficit.

The projected deficit for 2014 is $537 million. The population of Newfoundland and Labrador is a bit over a half million.

The $537-million deficit adds $1,000 to the provincial debt for each and every one of us, every woman, man and child. I sincerely hope your household finances are a bit more responsibly managed.

And…the $537 million dollar deficit is almost identical to the $522 million earmarked for NALCOR and it's money pit…Muskrat Falls. It is ironic that we keep going into deficit only to add even more debt in the form of this horrendous deal that is both unneeded and a giveaway to Nova Scotia and private contractors. The few will benefit yet again at the expense of the many.

Succinct . What else is there to say? How about $16,000 per person for the $8 billion dollar Muskrat Monster? Or the $72,000 per person over the Muskrat, 50-year, pay-off period?

And what a dog, and what a bone !!!! --- Or $140,000 over 50 years per household. ----- While each household in Nova Scotia pays about $10,000 over 50 years ---- FOR ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF POWER.
