Revolted by the ‘revolt’

I have been made aware of Matt Barber’s article “The Coming Christian Revolt” in another local publication.

The “Revolt” is a call to war for intensely unstable fanatics. Even the graphics with the bible on the page were particularly laughable and unnerving at the same time.

How dare this other publication include the beautiful image of two men’s hands with their wedding bands.

I have a similar photo from my husband’s and my wedding day.

I try not to think of their article when I see my precious wedding photo. The Pride Flag with a small sidebar for the gays is an equally confusing element to the concept of their two-page spread. This other local publication made many conscious choices in selecting and presenting this manifesto of hate.

Barber’s words smack of David Koresh. Remember him? He was the leader of the Davidian Branch who instigated the Waco Texas Massacre. Koresh also called for the true believers to come together, in a “peaceful” way, for the world at large was corrupt and destined for destruction. Such horrors are the inevitable result of these hateful tirades. Who knows what the effect could be of a local magazine showing support for such hate? I remember being a gay teen trying to accept myself. I would have been crushed to see a local media source showing support for this man. The hate has hit home. You may say that everyone has the right to express their view, however, this other magazine has made a shameful and classless choice in printing this trash.

Is this their new mandate to choose such disturbing content? I’m sure there were other letters of greater import to choose from. This other publication simply chose the “Revolt” for the expected and inevitable reaction it has gotten. This is a pathetic ploy for greater readership. I didn’t make a habit of reading this other publication anyway (they can be proud that they got me to read that one article), but you can bet I would endorse a boycott of this other magazine. I applaud Kyle Curlew of Western Pride for filing a human rights complaint in response to the “Revolt” being published by this other magazine. The complaint is made under C-46, Section 19, which pertains to “propaganda and the incitement of hate towards an identifiable group.” I wonder what sordid and unsavoury ideas are circulating around their office to have led to this hate letter being printed.

Freedom of the press? No! A blatant abuse of their power of dissemination. They should look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves, “Do I reflect the content I choose to print?”

Be careful about remarks that are not "Politically Correct". The newspaper just apologized for comments made by a readers comments yesterday - even though I may have disagreed with those comments. There are no rights allowing freedom of speech apparently.

The sad reality is obviously the staff at the herald or powers that be know there exists an ultra conservative religious base mostly I would suggest in rural parts of the island, who give this type of bible thumping considerable thought. I think we all know there are still major anti-LGBT views out there but it's very subtle how they show their prejudice. This being one example.

While I personally disagree with the opinions expressed in this controversial letter I also disagree with those who think it should have been censored by the Nfld. Herald. True freedom of speech and the press means printing even those opinions that most find unpalatable. Lack of censorship is the essential cornerstone of any free and democratic society. I've found that the best way to deal with people like Mr.Barbour is to laugh in their faces. Jesus spent an awful lot of time alone in the desert with 12 healthy young men….you trying to tell me that he was the odd man out EVERY night …????

I actually bought that issue so I could see which companies choose to advertise with the Herald. I won't be buying from any of those companies for the next six months.

Pretty disgusting stuff from the Herald. Gone from shameless self promotion to just shameless.
