We need better ostomy coverage

There is one point that I would like NDP Leader Lorraine Michael to emphasize to our current Progressive Conservative government.

The current public ostomy coverage should be extended to cover ostomates (people who have permanent or temporary colostomies, ileostomies and urostomies) who are receiving or eligible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program Access and Assurance Plans.

Our provincial government plan only covers ostomates who are on income support/special needs and the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program’s 65-plus seniors (who are receiving the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement.)

I informed the recent United Ostomy Association of Canada’s Conference at the St. John’s Delta Hotel, July 31-Aug. 2, especially the conference’s two guest speakers, Filomena Servidio-Italiano of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada and Jim Fitzgerald, Ostomy Toronto and Ad-hoc Ontario Assistive Devices Plan Ostomy Grant Committee, that all Canadian ostomates, not just Newfoundland and Labrador ostomates, need access to affordable ostomy supplies through a national pharmacare or national/provincial/territorial ostomy program.
