I want to add my voice to the many in Newfoundland and beyond who admire and support Brenda and Martin Seymour of the Spaniard’s Bay fire department in their struggle for decency and equality. The Seymours’ brave refusal to accept the unacceptable is an inspiration, as is their refusal to respond in kind to some extreme provocation.

Sexist attitudes and actions like what Brenda Seymour has faced are still all too common right across Canada, not to mention the world. Those who would portray this story as proof of the province’s backwardness are simply wrong. In fact, it is the Seymours’ courage and determination that is typical of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

In his poem “And We Were Sailors,” Newfoundland poet David Benson says: “Our men were able and strong, but our women were mighty.”

Indeed, and as Brenda, Martin and their many supporters show, they still are.

Well said Brad, people want them tarred and feathered, lynch mob mentality, and they say the Firefighters have to stop living in the past. Talk about your double standard!!

Gotta love the lynch mob on the comments section. Innocent until proven guilty? No sir! Not here

Thank you Brad....I thought I was alone...it would seem so by the comments...most are ready to castrate the entire department....that is not showing much appreciation for the years of volunteer service....I'd bet there has been more upheaval since this happened than in the previous 25 years ....Lynch mob describes it very well

Whooo , the terminated Enforcement Officer is indeed a bit sketchy , considering recent comments through media. He certainly comes across to me, as a know it all mainlander, who comes home and teaches the peasants how normal society operates. That in itself may be the biggest problem , the council had to deal with. No excuses, for the absolute cowardly harassment of Brenda, and the sexual harassment, that has certainly been proven. Time to heal folks! Stop the name calling and insults, and get back to what you were elected to do. Represent your municipality as best you can. As for the Firefighters , come back to your town , where you are supported and especially needed , but please try to see this incident as a learning experience for everyone involved.

I'm in support of the truth. The firefighters may be silent because there may be litigation, so they may have been advised in consideration of that. Anybody can accuse anybody of anything, and only a fool would take the word of one individual without a thorough investigation and a report. No wonder more trials prefer judges, and not juries.

To: Say The truth is that Brenda's firefighter instructor showed a porn video. and she was sexually harassed in her workplace.

I don't know what you're in support of but it isn't 'the truth'.

"Say" another anonymous supporter of sexual harassment. How can you say this when the adolescent behaviour of showing a pron film has been admitted to and the "trainer" has been demoted. Yet you expect everyone outside your little town to believe that was perfectly ok and your fire department who think it is a "joke" to show a porn film are not also guilty of sexual harassment of the lone female. Do you really think we are as adolescent thinking as you? Do you think the women reading your words believe one syllable? If it walks like a duck If it acts like a duck it is a duck. If you have porn films in training sessions and think it is a joke then there is very good chance you will also make sexual jokes such as insinuating a piece of equipment was used to during male masturbation and given to the female firefighter . Are you trying to tell us this JOKE did not happen? Are you assuming everyone reading your comment is stupid. ACCEPT THE FACT YOUR BEHAVIOUR AND THE SUPPORTING BEHAVIOUR OF THE PEOPLE IN YOUR TOWN FOR SEXUAL HARRASMENT SHOWS YOUR BRAIN WASHED INTO MISGOYNIST THINKING???????????????

You have no idea what the facts behind the whole picture are, now, do you? You take this one persons word for it. By congratulating Seymour you condemn the firefighters, all on her word. How fair is that? Hope you never serve on a jury.

Let's Assume that Helen Forsey and she was listening to the evidence. Here is what she would hear. 1. Brenda said porn was played. This was proven TRUE! 2. Brenda stated a person sitting in the firechief's office made a very vulgar remark to her. Not denied yet! 3. Another fireman stated when the porn was shown her Brenda's Husband was there laughing along with Brenda. Fact. He wasn't even in town! Now I ask you " if these statements are false why haven't the firemen challenge this? No SAY you are the one confused on this and not Helen Forsey!

"say" you are such a supporter of the firefighters and keep saying about the other side of the story, well where is it. The other side of the story is that those former firefighters and too ashamed to speak it, because they know they are wrong. They use women and children like yourself to say this BS about the other side of the story but all we have heard from them is lies. Like that husband and wife watched the video and laughed at it, when the husband wasn't even in town. You want to try to protect liars go ahead, but I hope you teach your children not to be like you !!!

The facts??? It's a fact that the boys ran away when the accusation of harassment became public. That's not something people do when they've been wrongly accused. Another fact, the town enforcement officer was let go because he told the town they messed up on the harassment complaint. And another fact, the trainer admitted he played the porn. One person word? No, actions of some and the admissions by others. Hope you're never asked to connect the dots. You and your 19 buddies can get lost.
