I want to add my voice to the many in Newfoundland and beyond who admire and support Brenda and Martin Seymour of the Spaniard’s Bay fire department in their struggle for decency and equality. The Seymours’ brave refusal to accept the unacceptable is an inspiration, as is their refusal to respond in kind to some extreme provocation.
Sexist attitudes and actions like what Brenda Seymour has faced are still all too common right across Canada, not to mention the world. Those who would portray this story as proof of the province’s backwardness are simply wrong. In fact, it is the Seymours’ courage and determination that is typical of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
In his poem “And We Were Sailors,” Newfoundland poet David Benson says: “Our men were able and strong, but our women were mighty.”
Indeed, and as Brenda, Martin and their many supporters show, they still are.
