Good jobs have no trouble finding workers

I write concerning the June 9, page C1 story “Labour shortage and work ethic, concern new small business group head.”

Oh my, now look at what happened. The Canadian labour work ethic has come into question by the new head of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Dan Kelly.

Could it be that independent business, big Canadian business as well as huge international business have lobbied the Canadian and provincial governments to the detriment of the very populace that it serves? Canada was founded from the bottom up over the past 145 years. People rolled up their sleeves and carried each other forward. The rewards at one time were great, and I mean, great for all.

The noticeable lack of ethics over the past 20 years was bound to trickle down. With some corporate heads reaping millions and then trashing the very companies they work for. With some politicians abusing their elected positions and scamming what they perceive as their entitlements. Gets everyone down, I guess.

The noticeable lack of rewarding employment for well-educated generations of students. The noticeable lack of health benefits offered. The noticeable lack of pension benefits looking forward into the future. The noticeable lack of mentoring. The erosion in Canadian ideals. The continued corporate push to the bottom for Canadian labour. Gets everyone down, I guess.

Dan Kelly says, “we’ve got to make sure we don’t erode our work ethic.” Mr. Kelly then pledged to continue the federation’s focus on changes to the immigration system, temporary foreign worker program and proposed changes to the federal government’s employment insurance program. All of this lobbying, all of this double speak. Gets everyone down, I guess.

Make no mistake, there is no labour shortage in Canada. Yes, there are enough people in Canada to fill all the jobs. Make these jobs meaningful and rewarding and they will be filled.

There are a lot of hard workers who deserve a living wage. With the increased cost of living people just can't afford to work for minimum wage and no benefits. It is time to change the attitude of employers.

Canadians shouldn't be pitted against each other in an economic race to the bottom; that is what the corporate and political powers are engineering with their disgusting agenda. Mitchinson is bang on - we should look after our own, first. All of this "prosperity" in Newfoundland today is concentrated in the hands of the few. The rest of us are left with grossly inflated living expenses to offset any wage or salary gains that are made. Meanwhile, we are feverishly extracting all of our resources in their raw form so that we simply ship all of the profits away to our multinational betters... Temporary foreign workers should be a last resort; there should be no financial benefits to using them. As for immigration, I don't think that is necessarily a solution to anything but addressing acute skill shortages. We have expanded far beyond that, however... Why don't we make a better attempt to integrate those Canadians we already have into our existing society? As far as I'm concerned, Canada is a badly fragmented country that has little sense of culture or community from coast to coast. What binds us? All I see are jarring differences... We need to do better in terms of education. We need to do better in terms of meaningful employment. We need to do better in terms of social cohesion.

This is the Newfoundland work ethic is spades. I'll sit on my skill-free Rse, and when you selfish employers invent some better way of enticing me to grace you with my presence, I might consider it. Weep for Adam Smith.

"when you selfish employers invent some better way of enticing me to grace you with my presence..." How about paying living wages? Even Adam Smith knew that slavery wasn't economically viable.

This post is a perfect example of Newfoundland debate: entirely predicated on complete nonsense, insulting hyperbole, and/or irrational claims. Everywhere else in the world, people take responsibility for their lives and make their own choices...not here. Here everytihng is someone else's fault, someone else's greed, someone else's problem that needs to be fixed...Alex, if you are immortal, by all means keep it up and see how it all works out for you. But if not, I can guarantee you'd be better off climbing off the high horse you share with a half million other lost souls and try coping with the planet you're actually on.

I agree David. Alex was totally out of line suggesting that us noblemen pay living wages! Next the working class will want a vote! You're right, the lower orders are always on their high horses always blame someone else's fault or greed. How very uppity of them. If they would shut up and get back to work things would be fine for us. Drinks at the club?
