Letter to the editor -
More often than not, the Letters to the Editor section of this or any other newspaper is used as a forum to complain.
Marked with negativity, letters to the editor commonly point out what the author feels is wrong with a certain person, service, or organization.
This letter, however, is not about complaining. Quite the opposite, I write this letter to express my utmost satisfaction with a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland - Dr. Amanda Bittner. As a recent graduate from the political science program at Memorial University, I can say without hesitation that Dr. Bittner's role as a professor was instrumental in me not only finishing my degree, but also attaining considerable success while doing so.
Some professors have very lazy teaching methods - they often have shortened lectures that display little amount of preparation, and offer little interaction with students.
This is not the case for Professor Bittner.
I would venture to say that when it comes to class preparation, she does as much homework as the very students she teaches. Dr. Bittner not only offers a very interesting array of difficult, though interesting readings, but also makes sure that she knows these articles to the point where she can remember what page a particular quote came from.
To complement her excellent teaching, Dr. Bittner takes the extra step and strives to ensure that her students are performing to the best of their abilities. Despite frequently being busy with research and correcting, Professor Bittner makes sure that she is readily available should students have any concerns; her office door is always open.
There are so many students who would certainly agree with what I have said in this letter. Even if they're not political science majors or minors, students who take a course with Dr. Bittner come away feeling enthusiastic about the subject nonetheless.
Dr. Bittner is a remarkable professor, and I feel it very fitting to use the intellectual platform of a letter to the editor to commend her for the excellent work that she does.
