Letters to the editor -

I recently returned from St. John's (my second visit there) where I stayed with friends who live close to Bowring Park.

Thanks to Mischief, our hosts' resident golden lab, we enjoyed early morning walks through this lovely historic park.

Kudos to the park wardens who look after it so lovingly and to the taxpayers and donors who value its worth, both the built-up section and the wild section where nature inspires and energizes.

Shame, however, on the hoodlums (presumably young males fond of their ale) who, every evening, throw cycles or wooden barriers or other objects into the river and upturn the picnic tables and garbage cans, not to mention the beer bottles that they break in the process.

They are the only blot in a wonderful city where the inhabitants are friendly and nature is bountiful.

You are absolutely right! There could be some young females as well and even older persons for that matter, although the latter is highly unlikely. That is why I said presumably and not certainly. What I am absolutely certain about is that your lovely park deserves our respect and protection.

Thank you Maya for your letter. I believe that most areas of our wonderful country have their beautiful spots and i also believe that vandalism should not be tolerated. put more resources into rounding up the culprits and make a clear statement that we intend to prosecute offenders to the full extent of the law. please make drastic changes to the young offender laws and that will help curb some of the vandalism.

A nice letter but you should never assume that young males are the only hoodlums drinking beer and causing damage to property. could there possibly be some young females?

I'm sick and tired of suggestions to toughen the Young Offenders Act. They fall on deaf ears. What I would like to see is a reopening of something like the Salmonier Line facility where hoodlums were put to work. But instead of a hotel setting it would be bread & water and cartoons or Weather TV for their entertainment.

I agree with the letter writer, and the above poster. I would also mention that Montreal is certainly not free of this type of activity. I noticed that many of the hoodlums that laid waste to Toronto during the G20 were from Montreal.
