I write regarding Lana Payne’s Aug. 28 column, “No dissent welcome.”
Payne uses every trick, stereotype and half-truth in the book to demonize the Harper government’s attempt to kill the useless long-gun registry.
The sad truth for special interest groups like the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (of which Payne is the president) is that they represent the vocal minority. Poll after poll clearly shows Canadians want the registry scrapped. Labour leaders, the chiefs of police and other vocal special interests are concerned more with the money they will lose after the registry is abolished than they are with public safety. It is long overdue to derail this gravy train.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Public Service Alliance of Canada, etc., are expressing solidarity over perceived union job losses equalling lost union dues.
The chiefs of police have received more than $115,000 from CGI, a gun registry contractor, according to the Globe and Mail’s Christie Blatchford (April 2009).
The Coalition for Gun Control received over $500,000 from the previous Liberal government.
Project Ploughshares continues to get government funding.
The list is endless.
