My wife and have just returned from a wonderful five-day vacation in St. John’s — everything we were told about the city, the people, the food, the whale-watching and sightseeing tours came through in spades. I have a question though, and perhaps there is a logical answer to be found somewhere along the line.
We arrived at the airport and were told there was no shuttle service into the city and we should take a cab. No problem.
We spoke to the dispatcher outside the airport who ordered up a cab. He asked where we were going and we told him the Sheraton Hotel downtown, to which he said the trip would take about 30 minutes and would cost about $25.
We arrived at the Sheraton precisely 30 minutes later and the meter read smack on $25. No problem. We felt a $5 tip was well worthwhile given all the useful information we had been told on our way into town.
After a tremendous five-day holiday, we left the Sheraton by cab for the airport and our flight back to Toronto. I even put a $10 and a $20 dollar bill in my pocket ready to give the cab driver.
Less than 16 minutes later, we were being dropped at the departure entrance at the airport and the cab meter signalled $16! My question is how come the $9 difference?
When you consider the hundreds of flights and the thousands of visitors who come to St. John’s every season, you don’t need to be much of a mathematician to figure out the numbers.
