A tale of two taxis

My wife and have just returned from a wonderful five-day vacation in St. John’s — everything we were told about the city, the people, the food, the whale-watching and sightseeing tours came through in spades. I have a question though, and perhaps there is a logical answer to be found somewhere along the line.

We arrived at the airport and were told there was no shuttle service into the city and we should take a cab. No problem.

We spoke to the dispatcher outside the airport who ordered up a cab. He asked where we were going and we told him the Sheraton Hotel downtown, to which he said the trip would take about 30 minutes and would cost about $25.

We arrived at the Sheraton precisely 30 minutes later and the meter read smack on $25. No problem. We felt a $5 tip was well worthwhile given all the useful information we had been told on our way into town.

After a tremendous five-day holiday, we left the Sheraton by cab for the airport and our flight back to Toronto. I even put a $10 and a $20 dollar bill in my pocket ready to give the cab driver.

Less than 16 minutes later, we were being dropped at the departure entrance at the airport and the cab meter signalled $16! My question is how come the $9 difference?

When  you consider the hundreds of flights and the thousands of visitors who come to St. John’s every season, you don’t need to be much of a mathematician to figure out the numbers.

Come on, do you really need to be told why? Okay, I'll tell you, and I have no relationship to the taxi industry whatsoever. Taxis that stand by at airports in order to be available to airline passengers forego the spotty, but often lucrative, traffic that is not related to the airport. That means that they are sitting around quite often for up to 90 minutes without a fare to cover their costs. That's the reason that a cab costs you to leave the airport. The other option is for you to call a cab from a payphone and wait for someone to show up as much as 20 minutes later to take you to your destination. It's as simple as that!

This happened to me once as well. The fact that the driver told you it would be thirty minutes from the airport to the Sheraton is a flat-out lie. I don't think there are two points in St. John's that would take 30 minutes to go from (unless there are construction delays). I think the airport cab is City Wide.

Ahh, taxis!! They'll run you over, cut you off, speed around the city like there's no tomorrow - but only when they do not have paying passengers. Once they pick you up, they find the slowest possible way to to get you to your destination. They should work for Government!!!!

Julian, it looks like, upon arrival in Sin Jahn's, you received the deluxe arrival taxi trip, not the bare-bones departure taxi trip. The former comes with an anotated introduction to our city, the latter a don't-get-hit-by-the-door-on-the-way-out whirlwind trip to departures.

It is my understanding that there is a base rate charged when you take a taxi from the airport, it does not matter where you are going. You could of just went two houses down the road and it would of still been $25. However, getting a taxi to the airport is different, there is no base charge.
