Wakeham misses the mark

Poor Bob Wakeham; he tries so hard in his column (“Lest we forget,” Dec. 11) to be nasty, but instead, he makes us grateful for his extensive list of fallen Newfoundlanders — all of whom, we are so proud of. These souls are, indeed, always part of our current lives.

What poor Wakeham has missed is that they, as well as Danny Williams, have lifted our beings to even higher levels of freedom and self respect.

Thanks to poor Wakeham, we now know these fallen soldiers by name.

Because of their ultimate sacrifices,  we now have yet another reason to thank  them for Mr. Williams’ hard-won freedom to speak up and improve our lot.

No, Mr. Wakeham, we shall not forget either them or Mr. Williams.

Dave Murphy, you are really bending over backwards in your attempt to justify the former premier's classless actions. To compare an attention seeking, populist politician's blatant attempt to leech off the emotions and respect for our fallen servicemen is as low as it goes. Williams did not give his life for his country and in fact, disrespected every citizen of Canada with his childish and antagonistic removal of our National flag as a show of political spite. The credit the opportunist for lifting ''our beings to even higher levels of freedom and self-respect'' is insulting and a gross exaggeration. Williams was a shameless self promoter who's #1 priority was his popularity. To compare him to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice is insulting. I hope every reader of your letter remembers that and, more importantly, the person that wrote it.
